Harry Frederic Bailey

June 9, 1911 — Dec. 24, 2003

Longtime Groveland resident Harry Frederic Bailey died Wednesday at an Irvine medical center. He was 92.

He was born in Seattle. He lived in the Pine Mountain Lake area of Groveland for 20 years and most recently lived in Irvine for a year with his daughter, Patricia Anne Harrison. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and St. Joseph's High School in San Jose. During high school, he and classmates helped save historic artifacts during a fire at Mission Santa Clara.

His family said he enjoyed a long career working as superintendent of operations for Pacific Motor Trucking Co., an affiliate of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1976.

He was a member of the Catholic church and was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus, Fresno chapter.

He was proud of his family and devoted to his Catholic faith, and was a man with a strength of character, reliability, integrity with a ready wit and no-nonsense spirit, his family added.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Bailey is survived by another daughter, Mary Anne Anderson of Piedmont; a son, Robert F. Bailey of Amity, Ore.; a sister, Regina Forbes of San Jose; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Viola "Teddy" Bailey, and brothers, James and Richard Bailey.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Big Oak Flat. A reception will follow.

Georgia Casillas

April 22, 1912 — Dec. 25, 2003

Former longtime Tuolumne County resident Georgia Casillas died Thursday at a Merced hospital. She was 91.

She was born in New Mexico and lived in Tuolumne County for 64 years. She first settled in Standard and then Soulsbyville with her family.

After her husband died, she moved to Sonora, where she lived for 27 years. She moved to Merced a year and a half ago to be near her daughter, Lutie Reid Harris.

Her family said she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed walking in the evenings, her family added, and had a wonderful touch with house plants.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Ciria Ghiorso of Denver; a brother, Eugene Romero of Jamestown; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Candelario Casillas; four sisters; and a grandson, John Ghiorso.

A chapel service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Private burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.

Donations can be made in her memory to the John Ghiorso Memorial Nursing Scholarship, in care of the Sonora High School District Office, attention Julie Giove, 251 S. Barretta St., Sonora, CA 95370.

Harry M.

Chadwell

Sept. 16, 1944 — Dec. 24, 2003

Former Sonora resident Harry M. Chadwell died unexpectedly Wednesday at a Turlock medical center. He was 59.

He was born in Oakland and was raised in the Melones and Sonora areas. He lived in Tuolumne County on and off for 10 years. He lived in Hilmar for 23 years and worked as a control center operator for Turlock Irrigation District for 37 years. He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam from 1962-65. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, North American Hunting Club, California Rifle and Pistol Association, and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 88 in Turlock for 18 years.

His family said he was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Mr. Chadwell is survived by his wife, Mary L. Penrose Chadwell of Hilmar; two sons, Daniel Chadwell of Delhi and Gaston Mariolle Jr. of Hilmar; a daughter, Denise Chadwell of Hilmar; a sister, Clete Stafford of Sonora; a brother, Paul Chadwell of Costa Mesa; and five grandchildren, Stephanie, Dano and Katie Chadwell, all of Delhi, and Kimberly Chadwell and Kelly Chadwell-Lundstrom, both of Hilmar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.H. and Dorothy Chadwell; and by a sister, Maydeen Stockwell, who died Dec. 2.

A memorial service was to be held today.

Delphine Ann Maples

March 8, 1916 — Dec. 24, 2003

Former Sonora resident Delphine Ann Maples died Wednesday at a Modesto medical center. She was 87.

She was born in Chinese Camp, a member of the pioneer Lepape family. Her father was Judge Leonard Lepape. She was the last of five children of Leonard and Carrie Lepape.

She was raised in Sonora, where she lived until she was married to her first husband, Jim, at age 18. She moved to Oakland and came back to Sonora in 1951 after her husband died. She moved to Modesto in 1958 and married James Maples.

She graduated from Sonora High School in 1934 and worked as an executive secretary and bookkeeper for 25 years for a pest control company in both Oakland and Modesto.

She was a past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star in the late 1950s.

Her family said her main focus was her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sibert of Modesto; sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Dayna Sibert of Petaluma and Andy and Janice Sibert of Long Beach; a stepson, Fred Maples of Modesto; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephews, Russell Lepape of San Jose, David Lepape of Soulsbyville and Harry Lepape Jr. of Washington; and a niece, Ellen Gustufson of Tracy.

Her husband, James "J.B." B. Maples died on the same day she did (see obituary below).

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Lepape; and brothers, Russell, Andrew and Harry Lepape Sr.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

James ‘J.B.' B. Maples

Jan. 4, 1916 — Dec. 24, 2003

Former Sonora resident James "J.B." B. Maples died Wednesday at a Modesto care center. He was 87.

He was born in Van Buren, Ark., and lived in Modesto for 71 years and in Sonora for a few years. He worked as a warehouseman for 43 years for Tri-Valley Cannery. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of Teamsters Retirees Club No. 748.

His family said he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling and his work.

Mr. Maples is survived by a daughter, Deborah Sibert of Modesto; sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Dayna Sibert of Petaluma and Andy and Janice Sibert of Long Beach; a stepson, Fred Maples of Modesto; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Delphine, on the same day he died (see obituary above).

No services are scheduled at his request.

Marela Rossi

June 25, 1947 — Dec. 23, 2003

Marela Rossi of Glencoe died unexpectedly Tuesday at her home. She was 56.

She was born in Oakland and lived in Glencoe for 19 years. She worked as an electronics assembler.

She is survived by her son, John Rossi of Glencoe; and her mother, Ella Mallory of Glencoe.

Services were held.

Jack Scialabba

Dec. 24, 1913 — Dec. 24, 2003

Former longtime Jamestown resident Jack Scialabba died Wednesday at a Mountain View care home. He was 90.

He was born in Butler, Pa., and lived in Jamestown for 25 years. He most recently lived in Mountain View for three years.

Mr. Scialabba is survived by his children, Jackie Kohl and Peter Scialabba; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorine Scialabba, and a son, Alan Scialabba.

A funeral service was to be held at 1 p.m. today at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real West in Mountain View.

VANOVER — James G. Vanover, 83, of Columbia died this morning at a Sonora care home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
