Robert Maurice ‘Cowboy Bob'

Curry

Jan. 18, 1936 — Dec. 13, 2002

Robert Maurice "Cowboy Bob" Curry, 66, of Greeley Hill died Dec. 13 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Curry was born in Spokane, Wash., and had lived in Greeley Hill for the past 26 years. Before that, he lived another 26 years in the Bay Area, all that time working as a paramedic for Silva's Ambulance Service in San Mateo.

He had served in the Army and was also a guide and packer in the Emigrant Wilderness and the Yosemite back country for 20 years. While on a pack trip in the Emigrant Wilderness with Paul and Nancy Girard of Concord in 1985, he helped save Nancy's life after her appendix burst. He rode horseback up granite terrain for two hours to find a radio to call for help. Then he rode another three miles to contact the Stanislaus National Forest dispatch center. A helicopter was sent to take her to a Sonora hospital.

His family said his love for the mountains sustained him through his long illness.

He liked hunting, fishing and riding horses in the mountains and on a ranch with his grandchildren, where he also worked with leather and repaired saddles. He was a skilled automobile mechanic and also loved music, singing and dancing.

Mr. Curry is survived by his wife, Kay Curry of Greeley Hill; two daughters, Caryn DeVoto-Dixon of Greeley Hill and Debbie Curry of Washington; three stepsons, Dana DeVoto of Sonora, Scott DeVoto of Tuolumne and Tony Garney of Walla Walla, Wash.; and eight grandchildren, Marvin DeVoto, Braden DeVoto, Brett DeVoto, Brittany Ann Dixon, Brandon Dixon, Tony Frances DeVoto, Bobbi Kay DeVoto and Colun Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Olga Curry, and a son, Michael Curry.

A memorial and celebration of life is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Greeley Hill Community Hall, followed by a potluck.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
