Dorothy Higgins Barnes

Dorothy Higgins Barnes of Sonora, a World War II veteran and registered nurse, died Dec. 10 at a Sonora long-term care home. She was 88.
Born in Byhalia, Ohio, to Frank Higgins and Lou Baldwin Higgins, Mrs. Barnes graduated as a registered nurse from St. Rita's Hospital in Ohio in 1942.
She served in the Army Nurse Corps with the rank of captain from 1942 to 1946, working in surgical and medical wards as part of the 115th evacuation hospital in the European theater of operations in France and Germany.
She received the European, African, Middle Eastern campaign medal, World War II Victory medal and American Campaign medal.
Mrs. Barnes was married to the late Bernard "Bob" Barnes for 32 years until his death on May 17, 2002. They lived in Porterville and Arnold during their marriage, and their last 20 years together were spent living in Columbia.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by three step-children, Patricia Cooper of Grass Valley, Carolyn Rabe of Olympia, Wash., and Steven Barnes, a missionary in Japan; numerous nieces and nephews; and several step-grandchildren.
Neptune Society of Northern California handled arrangements, and her family had a small, private memorial.

Joshua William Gardner

Former Sonora resident Joshua William Gardner died Dec. 8 at his Sacramento residence. He was 46.
Raised in Taos, N.M., he lived in Sonora for 10 years before moving to Sacramento to attend Aspire College, where he recently earned his building inspection and plan check certifications.
Prior to that, he worked as a carpenter for more than 20 years.
Family members said he loved cooking, and he moved to Sonora to be closer to them.
He is survived by his mother, Louise Gardner of Sonora; brothers and sister-in-law, Thaddeus Gardner of Sonora and Benjamin and Tina Gardner of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Eric Davis of Jamestown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Gardner, in 1994.
Joanne Del Anderson

Calaveras County native Joanne Del Anderson died Thursday at her Vallecito home. She was 69.
Mrs. Anderson was a bank teller at United California Bank in San Andreas for 34 years. More recently, she worked at the Calaveras County auditor's office for five years.
She was a member of the Calaveras County Junior Livestock Boosters and a founding member of the Calaveras Saddle Club.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, Albert "Tudie" Anderson of Vallecito; a son, Ronnie Anderson of Vallecito; two daughters, Cheryl Stanesic of Vallecito and Cindi Leonard of Billings, Mont.; a brother, Bud Miladinovich of Angels Camp; a sister, Elaine Jorn of Angels Camp; and grandchildren, Barbara and Danica Stanesic, Jeremy Leonard and Shannon, Ace and Lisa Anderson, all of Vallecito.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Angels Memorial Chapel. Visitation is today from 1-6 p.m. at the chapel.

MATHESON A memorial service for Leonne Evelyn Matheson, 85, of Jamestown, who died Thursday, is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.
