Kathleen Christine Gorgas

Aug. 19, 1957 — Nov. 28, 2012

Kathleen Christine Gorgas died Nov. 28 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 55.

Ms. Gorgas was born in Sonora to Don and Shirley Gorgas. She was raised in Stent, near Jamestown.

She contracted polio when she was 3 years old. Despite meager means, her parents had a swimming pool built so she could exercise and strengthen her body.

Her parents were determined to keep her involved in activities while growing up, including the Eager Beaver 4-H Club. They also encouraged her fondness for cooking and baking. She also enjoyed fishing with her father and riding horses from Kennedy Meadows to Emigrant Basin Camp as a young girl.

Ms. Gorgas graduated from Jamestown Elementary School and from Sonora High School in 1975. She graduated from Fresno State University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in health science and child development.

She continued on to earn a master’s degree in marriage, family and child counseling.

She worked briefly as a mental health therapist while living in the Fresno area.

She proudly earned her driver’s license and drove a specialized van while living in the Clovis area.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and traveling. She traveled to Hawaii with her mother and sisters.

She enjoyed knitting and would make afghans and quilts for her family. She also collected cookbooks and antique vases.

Ms. Gorgas returned to the family ranch in Stent in 1999 due to failing health. She moved to Jamestown in 2006.

Ms. Gorgas was preceded in death by parents.

She is survived by her siblings, Mary Gorgas Johnson, of Sonora, Dennis Gorgas, of Duluth, Minn., David Gorgas and his wife Mary, of Jamestown, Carol Gorgas, of Stent; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora.
