A.T. ‘Tom' Francek

Aug. 31, 1928 — Dec. 8, 2003

A.T. "Tom" Francek, 75, of Jamestown died Monday at a Sonora hospital.

Mr. Francek was born in Munger, Mich., and served in the Navy in Maritime Service. He worked as a millwright for 30 years.

He lived in Modesto for more than 40 years before moving to Jamestown 13 years ago.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 675 F&AM in Modesto, Scottish Rite Bodies of Stockton, Aahmes Temple in Livermore, Modest York Rite, Aames Mother Lode Shrine Club and Modesto Shrine Club.

Mr. Francek is survived by his wife, Donna Francek of Jamestown; three children, Chris Sharp of Sacramento and Peggy Cunha and Scott Francek, both of Jamestown; two brothers, Frank Francek of Pollock Pines and Ken Francek of Sonora; two sisters, Carol Walker and Kayleen Kloberdanz, both of Modesto; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas B. Francek; and three brothers, Gordon, Terry and Fred Francek.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Colonial Chapel-Franklin & Downs in Modesto. A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the chapel. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Modesto.

Remembrances can be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Lionel Van Dever

Oct. 17, 1909 — Dec. 7, 2003

Lionel Van Dever, 94, of Sonora died Sunday at a Sonora hospital.

Mr. Van Dever was born in Texas and worked as a tool-and-die maker for his entire career. He had lived in Sonora for 30 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed photography and painting.

Mr. Van Dever is survived by a daughter, Mozelle LaMesa of Williams; two sisters, Mozelle Vandever and Nina Vandever, both of San Angelo, Texas; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Van Dever, in 1992, and by a son, Jerry Van Dever, in 1991.

No services are planned.

Virginia M. Fritz

May 3, 1920 — Dec. 5, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Virginia M. Fritz, 83, died Friday at a Sonora hospital.

Mrs. Fritz was born in Seattle and lived in Sonora for 63 years. She owned and operated Cecil's Cafe, now the Diamondback Grill, on Washington Street in Sonora from 1949 to 1960.

She was a past member of the Sierra Rebekah Lodge and the Eagles.

Her family said she was a super grandmother and the matriarch of the family.

Mrs. Fritz is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dollie and Tom Hunter of Murphys; a brother, Michael Anderson of Columbia; four grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis and Debbie Hunter of Copperopolis, Timothy and Jenny Hunter of Fort Orford, Ore., T.J. Hunter of Murphys and Deanna and Mike Staggs of Tracy; six great-grandchildren, Logan and Morgan Staggs of Tracy, Jessy, Tommy and Timmy Hunter, all of Fort Orford, and Stacy Hunter of Copperopolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Fritz, in 1985.

Private services will be held on Christmas Day, which, her family said, was her favorite day.

Edna E. Trounce

May 14, 1911 — Dec. 9, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Edna E. Trounce, 92, died Tuesday at a care home in Sonora.

Mrs. Trounce, a homemaker, was born in Oakland and lived in Sonora for 31 years. She and her husband, William Trounce, lived in the Bay Area prior to moving to Tuolumne County. Her husband preceded her in death in 1984 after 59 years of marriage.

She was a member of Chapel in the Pines church in Twain Harte and the Sonora Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and bowling and was a member of the senior bowling league.

Mrs. Trounce is survived by a son, Jerry Trounce of Hartford, Ark.; two daughters, Brenda Griswold of Sonora and Ronda Trounce of Tuolumne; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Beulah B. Hughes

Aug. 11, 1916 — Nov. 29, 2003

Beulah B. Hughes, 87, of Groveland died Nov. 29 at a Modesto hospital of a stroke.

She was born near Denver and lived in Groveland for 14 years before moving to Modesto one month ago. She was a member of the Groveland Evangelical Free Church.

She spent many years teaching preschool children in school and church settings, her family said. They added that her love for her family was superseded only by her love of God, and that her faith was an inspiration.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her daughters, Lucinda Barnett of Groveland and Melissa Reece of Modesto; a sister, Alma Williams; five grandchildren, Christian Knight, Carissa Pace, Jeremiah Knight, Sam Reece and Justin Reece; a niece, Lynn Gutzman; and a nephew, Harold Williams.

She will be buried at Chapel in the Chimes in Hayward, next to her late husband, O.D. Hughes, and her mother, Emma Stanberry.

Donations can be made to the Salvation Army, San Joaquin County Chapter, 747 N. Pershing Ave., Stockton, CA 95203, or her family said, a tree can be planted in her memory.

Richard H. Ermel

Aug. 2, 1930 — Dec. 8, 2003

Richard H. Ermel, 73, of Copperopolis died Monday at his home.

Mr. Ermel, a native of Iola, Kan., lived in Copperopolis for 10 years.

He worked as a mechanic for the Safeway Corp. before his retirement, and served in the Navy during the Korean War.

His family said he was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Ermel is survived by his wife, Dorothy W. Ermel of Copperopolis; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Mary Beth Ermel of Rancho Cucamonga; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Jean and Morris Clark; a brother and sister-in-law, Elwin and Joan Ermel of Bronson, Kan.; and two granddaughters, Aimee Ermel and Taylor Clark.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Thomas Allen Bradbury Sr.

Jan. 7, 1958 — Dec. 5, 2003

Thomas Allen Bradbury Sr., 45, died Friday of complications of quadriplegia and diabetes at a care home in Washington.

Mr. Bradbury was born in Manhattan, Kan., and graduated from Buena High School in Ventura. He married Donna Watkins in 1979 and moved to Tuolumne County in 1987, where he lived for 10 years. He attended All Saints Catholic Church in Twain Harte and served the church as a lecturer and a catechist.

In 1991, Mr. Bradbury survived a car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. After the accident, he returned to school with his wife and graduated from Columbia College with an associate of science degree in business administration in 1997. He was the keynote speaker at his graduation ceremony.

After graduation, Mr. Bradbury transferred to California State University, Northridge, where he was pursuing a bachelor of science degree in business education. His family said he had planned to teach business at the high school level and hoped to inspire students to attend college. He was one class away from his degree when he died.

Mr. Bradbury is survived by his wife, Donna Bradbury of Los Angeles; three children, Tom Bradbury Jr. and Corey Bradbury, both of Tacoma, Wash., and Irene Bradbury of Los Angels; a granddaughter, McKenna of Tacoma; his father, Jim Bradbury of Exeter; and a brother, Bill Bradbury of Exeter.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at All Saints Catholic Church in Twain Harte.

HUMPHRIES — Florence "Helen" Humphries, 87, of Soulsbyville died Wednesday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

KIRKENDALL — Claire Kirkendall, 67, of Soulsbyville died Friday at a Santa Barbara hospital. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at San Roque Church, 3214 Calle Cedro in Santa Barbara. McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara is handling arrangements.

LYNN — Diane Elizabeth Lynn, 63, of Groveland died Wednesday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

TROTTER — Penny Lynn Trotter, 57, of Sonora died this morning at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
