Lillian Maria Cardwell

Former Columbia resident Lillian Maria Cardwell died Nov. 21 in Oakdale. She was 86.
Mrs. Cardwell was born in Richmond, Va.
She lived in several different areas of the United States and Mexico because of her husband, Charles Cardwell’s, military service.
They settled in Columbia in 1962 for his work with Merck mining companies.
She moved to a care facility Oakdale in December 2010.
Mrs. Cardwell was a member of the Sonora Smokepolers and enjoyed animals and taking walks on the beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband, to whom she was married for 56 years, in October 2003.
She is survived by her children, Karen Cardwell and Tom and Nancy Cardwell, all of Oakdale, and Brian Cardwell, of Sonora; granddaughter, Chelsea Cardwell, of Stockton; and one great-granddaughter.

A private family service is planned.

Michele Ann Fay
May 5, 1960 — Nov. 20, 2013
Mi-Wuk Village resident Michele Ann Fay died Nov. 20 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 53.
Ms. Fay was born in Long Beach, the daughter of Gail Johnson and Lyle Fay.
She grew up in Hayward and graduated from Mount Eden High School in 1978.
After high school, she worked as an accountant and bookkeeper in various industries, most recently at Sonora Precision Molds in Sierra Village.
She moved to Mi-Wuk Village in 1985.
Ms. Fay enjoyed telling jokes and stories.
She is survived by her mother, Gail Johnson, of Merlin, Ore; her father, Lyle Fay, of Lincoln; her children, Nicole Fay, of Redondo Beach, Jason Dyer, of Redondo Beach, and Faith Healy, of Sonora; her siblings, Debbie Moscoso, of Lees Summit, Mo., Marilyn Nichols, of Magalia, and Sean Fay, of Fremont; and grandson, Patrick Dyer, of Redondo Beach.
A memorial service and burial have been held.

Kandace Joy ‘Kandi’ (Coleman) Hawn

Sonora resident Kandace Joy “Kandi” (Coleman) Hawn died Nov. 29 at her home. She was 49.
Mrs. Hawn was born in Oakdale, the daughter of Bill and Vera Coleman.
Her family moved to Sonora 33 years ago. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1983 and worked as a bookkeeper for 10 years.
Mrs. Hawn enjoyed making salsa, wine tasting, antiquing, camping, gardening, painting and traveling the California coast. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Mrs. Hawn was preceded in death by her father, Bill Coleman, in 1979.
She is survived by her husband of six years, Ted Hawn, of Sonora; mother and stepfather, Vera and Gene Franck, of Tuolumne; her children, Amber Gustafson, of Rancho Cordova, Justin Carver, of Ione, and Jesse Carver, of Sonora; two grandchildren, Nathan Carver and Allison Carver, of Ione; sister, Kimberly Kiernan, of Ripon; four stepchildren; two stepsisters and two stepbrothers.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hurst Ranch in Jamestown.

John Robert ‘Jack’ Holt
Dec. 2, 1930 — Nov. 23, 2013
Sonora resident John Robert “Jack” Holt died Nov. 23 at Country Lane Estates. He was 82.
Mr. Holt was born in Worland, Wyo., the son of Alvin and Lila Holt.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 16 and served for 20 years. He worked his way up the ranks and was a pilot by age 25. He served during World War II, as well as in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He retired from the military in 1967. He moved to Sonora 43 years ago to work for Sierra Conservation Center for 18 years. He spent the last five years of his career with SCC at Vallecito Fire Camp.
Mr. Holt enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards.
He attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church and was a member of the Sonora branch of Sons in Retirement.
Mr. Holt was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Ann Holt, of Sonora; his children and their spouses, Holly and Paul Charpentier, of Kingsburg, Fresno County, Stuart and Shirley Holt, of Mead, Colo., and Steven and Julie Holt, of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Joshua Holt, of Northrop, Va., Jacob and Jonathan Holt, of Houston, Samantha Holt, of Northridge, and Mallory, Connor and Maryn Charpentier, all of Kingsburg; and three great-grandchildren.

E. Genette (Fields) Wilson
March 20, 1916 — Nov. 30, 2013
Sonora resident E. Genette (Fields) Wilson died Nov. 30 at her home. She was 97.
Mrs. Wilson was born in Bozeman, Mont., the daughter of Guy and Ola Fields.
Her family moved to Hanford, in Fresno County, when she was a young girl. Her father served as preacher of the Hanford church for 17 years.
She worked in fruit processing as a young woman and moved to San Diego during World War II for better paying job opportunities.
She worked in the aircraft electrical wiring department of Consolidated Aircraft Corp. during World War II. Because of her small stature, she was assigned to do the wiring in the aircraft’s tail, her family said.
She met John W. Wilson at the San Diego Tabernacle. They married in 1943.
She and her husband moved to Sonora in 1965. They owned and operated a long-term care facility. She was a licensed nursing home administrator and dietary supervisor.
She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband. She also enjoyed Christian missionary work.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, the Rev. John W. Wilson, in 2011; her brother, Wayne Fields; and her oldest daughter, Delight Petersen, in 2012.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, John and Karen Wilson, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., Steve and Linda Wilson, of Sonora, and Melodee Wilson and Audrey Hull, of Sonora; grandchildren, Terry Wilson, of Sonora, Sandra Smith, of Sonora, Davin Petersen, of Vancouver, Wash., and Darren Petersen, of Fallview, Ore.; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
