Lois JoAnn (Delger) Baldwin

Sonora resident Lois JoAnn (Delger) Baldwin died of complications from cancer on Nov. 16 at Avalon Care Center. She was 80.
Mrs. Baldwin was born in Jamestown, N.D., the daughter of Gladys Marie (Somerson) and Lloyd Foster Delger.
Her family moved frequently during her childhood because of her father’s work in road construction. They settled in Bellflower in Los Angeles County in the early 1940s.
She met Jex Baldwin in high school. They married on May 9, 1952.
They ran Baldwin Electric company and raised four children. They moved to the Sonora area and purchased the Phoenix Lake Resort in 1972. They ran the resort until 1978.
Mrs. Baldwin was involved with the Parent-Teacher Association, Cub Scouts, Girls Scouts and a bowling league, all in Bellflower.
She enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling in a motorhome across the United States, Mexico and Canada with her husband and friends.
Mrs. Baldwin was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sharon Delger, in 2008; and granddaughter, Rebecca East, in 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jex Baldwin, of Sonora; her children and their spouses, Frank and Darcey Baldwin, of Sonora, Darrel and Jennifer Baldwin, of Sparks, Nev., Lori and Everett East, of Jamestown, and Deon Peterson, of Linden; siblings, Doug Delger, of Encino, and Ruth Gort, of Bellflower; grandchildren, Jex, Ashley and Justin Baldwin, of Sonora, Andrew Baldwin, of Sparks, Steven Fraser, of Sparks, Elliott and Meridith Peterson, of Lodi, Leah Peterson, of Lodi, Heidi Baldwin, of San Diego, and Trever and Kelsey East, of Jamestown; and three great-grandchildren.
No service is planned.

Frank A. Giuffra Jr.

Valley Springs resident Frank A. Giuffra Jr. died Nov. 20 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stockton. He was 79.
Mr. Giuffra was born in French Camp, the son of Darlene and Frank Giuffra Sr.
He graduated from Calaveras High School, and lived in Calaveras County for the past 68 years.
Mr. Giuffra and his wife, Mary Jane Giuffra, owned and operated a family bakery, Giuffra’s Country Bakery, in San Andreas for 20 years.
He also worked for Associated Forest Products and Calaveras Cement Co.
Mr. Giuffra enjoyed travel, reading, family gatherings and watching sports on television.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mary Jane Giuffra; his parents; brothers Bill, Jack and Gerald Giuffra; and sister, Linda Giuffra.
Mr. Giuffra is survived by his sons, Robin Giuffra, of Valley Springs, Steve Giuffra, of Murphys, Greg Giuffra, of Murphys, and Richard and Michele Giuffra, of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter, Jody Renner, and her fiancé, Ruben Rodriguez, of Stockton; grandchildren, Tyler and Justin Giuffra, and Michael Braga; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 14 at the San Andreas Community Covenant Church, 261 Treat Ave. A potluck reception will be held at the church following the service.
Interment will be at Altaville Catholic Cemetery.

Marguerite E. ‘Margie’ (Bowden) Gurney
Aug. 23, 1928 — Nov. 27, 2013
Sonora resident Marguerite E. “Margie” (Bowden) Gurney died Wednesday at Avalon Care Center. She was 85.
Mrs. Gurney was born in Oakland, the daughter of Ralph and Matilda Bowden.
She married John Roach in 1953. They later divorced.
She married Bill Gurney in 1973.
She was a homemaker and raised three children.
She and her husband settled in Sonora 48 years ago.
Mrs. Gurney enjoyed knitting sweaters, blankets and hats. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and dog, Tasha.
She was a member of Sierra Bible Church and enjoyed attending Sunday service.
Mrs. Gurney was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Gurney; brother, Carl Bowden; and ex-husband, John Roach Sr.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, John Jr. and Keri Roach, of Oregon City, Ore., Glory Christensen, of Jamestown, and Edith and Gary Vincent, of Sonora; grandchildren, Russell King, of Santa Cruz, Andrea Robinson, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Michaela Vincent, of Sonora; sister, Florence Fry, of Virginia, and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.
