Mark Walter Popp

Angels Camp resident Mark Walter Popp died July 24 in Palo Alto, while receiving medical care at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. He was 63.
Mr. Popp was born in Hayward to Eugene and Eileen Popp. He was raised in Castro Valley.
He was a skilled marksman from a young age and enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Green Beret and served in the Special Forces Airborne Division and was involved in covert operations in Cambodia and Laos.
After his military service, Mr. Popp worked as a bodyguard for Ed Daly, owner of World Airways.
While working for Daly, he was involved with “The Last Flight from Da Nang” in March 1975.
He later worked as a commercial fisherman in Half Moon Bay.
Mr. Popp enjoyed fishing and took many trips to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and New Melones Reservoir. He also competed in bass fishing tournaments.
He married Gloria Beach in April 1995 and moved to Angels Camp five months later.
Mr. Popp traveled the world collecting rare snakes for the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. He also provided snakes to Cutter Laboratories in Berkeley for their venom.
Known as the “Snake Man,” he volunteered with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department to remove snakes from an area before deputies entered.
He gave snake lectures at service organization meetings, community events and the New Melones Visitors Center, where he also volunteered.
He was a member of Murphys Community Church and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 391.
Mr. Popp is survived by his wife of 18 years, Gloria Beach-Popp, of Angels Camp.
A burial with full military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 McCabe Road, Santa Nella.

JAMES — Patsy Ann James, 72, of Jamestown, died Friday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
PRESTON — Charolette Preston, 70, of Tuolumne, died Friday at Avalon Center Care of Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
ROBERSON — Robert “Bob” Roberson, 66, of Columbia, died Aug. 2 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, after an auto accident July 24. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, Sonora. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sierra Bible Church, 15171 Tuolumne Road, Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
ROEMER — Dorothy Roemer, 83, of Sonora, died Saturday at Skyline Place in Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
RUSSELL — Debra D. Russell, 64, of Twain Harte, died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
WAGES — Betty Sue Wages, 55, of Sonora, died July 29 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
