Beverly Joan Hurd

Jan. 20, 1930 — Aug. 20, 2012

Sonora resident Beverly Joan Hurd died Aug. 20 at her home. She was 82.

Mrs. Hurd was born in Huron, S.D., and moved to California in 1956.

She was a homemaker for more than 10 years before becoming a teacher’s assistant for physically handicapped children. 

She retired at 56 and returned to South Dakota with her husband, Forrest. They spent the next 15 years remodeling a farmhouse and enjoyed living in the country.

They later moved to Marble Falls, Texas, to be closer to their son, Greg.

They moved to Sonora in 2009 to be closer to their three daughters.

Mrs. Hurd  enjoyed water skiing, sewing and going to church. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Darell Gibbs; son Jeffrey; her daughter-in-law, Linda; brother, Dennis; and sister, Dorothy.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Forrest Hurd, of Sonora; her son, Greg Hurd, of Austin, Texas; her daughters and their husbands, Pam and Dan Schutlz, of Sonora, Carolyn and Rich Butler, of Ripon, and Diane and Larry Scicluna, of San Jose; siblings, Bob Osmanson, of Southern California, and Allan Gibbs, of Florida; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370, or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christian Heights Church, 13711 Joshua Way, Sonora.

Patricia Eileen ‘Pat’ (Lind) Jenkins

March 4, 1915 — Aug. 17, 2012

Sonora resident Patricia Eileen “Pat” (Lind) Jenkins died Aug. 17 at home. She was  97.

Mrs. Jenkins was the youngest of six children born in Owatonna, Minn., to Edward and Lillian Lind.

She was raised in Columbia, Ohio, where she graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

She worked as a social worker for several organizations, including Travelers Aid, the American Red Cross and Hospital Services Agency in Washington, D.C.

On Aug. 27, 1955 she married Dave Jenkins at St. Anthony’s Church in Washington, D.C.

They moved to Los Angeles in 1956. 

While in Los Angeles Mrs. Jenkins was involved with the Campfire Girls, Parent-Teacher Association, Montessori School, the Palos Verdes Association for Gifted Children and local drug abuse prevention programs. 

In 1970, the family moved to Denair, where Mrs. Jenkins worked part-time career selling World Book Encyclopedias. 

She returned to college and earned a master’s degree in social work from California State University, Fresno, in 1983. 

She and her husband retired to the Sonora area in 2005.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County and was part of the “Women’s Lunch Bunch.”

She enjoyed reading, music, especially classical, art and ballet. She enjoyed nature, including Yosemite Valley and Red Rock Country in Utah. 

Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her parents and all five older siblings, Jean, Edward, Josephine, Mary Ann and Lillian. 

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dave Jenkins, of Sonora; children, Ann Knight, of Mi-Wuk Village and Eileen Wright, of Sonora; her grandson Chris Wright; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County, “UUFTC Treasurer,” 19518 Hess Ave., Sonora, CA 95370.

A celebration of life with be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Unitarian Universalist fellowship house.

MUNGER — Ruth Munger, 91, of Sonora, died Friday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

RHINEHART — Jeanette Rhinehart, 85, of Sonora, died Friday at the Transitional Care Unit of Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
