Henry

‘Howard' Hill

Oct. 27, 1918 – Aug. 21, 2004

Former longtime Sonora resident Henry "Howard" Hill of San Andreas died Saturday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 85.

He was born in Buffalo, Texas, and had lived in Sonora since 1969, most recently in San Andreas for a short time. He owned and operated Howard's Restaurant in downtown Sonora from 1970-82.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-46. He was a past member of the Sonora Elks Lodge No. 1587, Sonora Rotary Club and Sonora Lyons Club.

He spent his life as an accomplished chef, a fabulous husband, a loyal father and a wonderful grandfather, his family said.

After his retirement in 1982, he spent as much time as his wife would allow fishing on New Melones Lake, his family added.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lola Hill of San Andreas; children, William Christian of Modesto and Sandra Francesconi of Jamestown; a brother, Bennie Hill of Fresno; grandchildren, Jon Christian and his wife, Sonia, of Hastings, Minn., Mindy Clifton and her husband, Kent, of Angels Camp, Rebecca Hill and her husband, Jim Imenez, of Ukiah, Mendocino County; and great-grandchildren, Shane Clifton of Angels Camp and Kaitlin and Cole Christian, both of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by sons, Randall Hill and John Christian.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

Shawn

Richard Larsen

Jan. 21, 1969 – Aug. 12, 2004

Former Soulsbyville resident Shawn Richard Larsen died Aug. 12 at his home in Brookings, Ore., after living many years with multiple sclerosis. He was 35.

He was born in Santa Clara to Richard and Lorraine Larsen. He grew up in Soulsbyville and attended Soulsbyville Grammar School. Then he was home-schooled.

He worked at Porter Painting in Sonora. He moved to Brookings in 1999.

He was a Jehovah's Witness who put his ministry first, his family said, and he was a ministerial servant.

His family said he enjoyed waterskiing, rock climbing and other outdoor activities, and he built and flew radio controlled airplanes. When he was 15 years old, he took flying lessons.

Mr. Larsen is survived by his parents, Richard and Lorraine Larsen of Brookings; sisters, Jennifer Larsen of Lebanon, Ore., Lori Odgers of Santa Clara and Joanne Madrigal and June Asti, both of San Jose; and a brother, Benjamin Larsen of Brookings.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1208 Ransom Ave., in Brookings with Mylo Paisley officiating. A reception is scheduled to follow at the Chetco Senior Center, 550 Chetco Lane in Brookings.

Tressie May Shoemaker

March 25, 1935 – Aug. 22, 2004

Longtime Jamestown resident Tressie May Shoemaker died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. She was 69.

She was born in Sallisaw, Okla., and had lived in Jamestown for 38 years. She worked as a certified nursing assistant for Sonora Community Hospital for 10 years.

Her family said she enjoyed walking and reading. She was a loving and giving person and she loved spending time with her grandchildren, her family added.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Allen Wear of Camas, Wash.; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Marci Kimbrell of Palmdale, Los Angeles County; brothers, Glen Morgan of Oklahoma, Arnold Morgan of Simi Valley, Ventura County, Jim Morgan of Arkansas; a sister, Joan Boyles of Palmdale; grandchildren, Cody and Shilo Kimbrell, both of Palmdale, Becky and Joshua Kimbrell, both of Oklahoma, Allen Scott Wear Jr., Ashley and Courtney Wear and Jay Shoemaker, all of Camas; and a companion, Harold Martin of Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shoemaker; a son, Billy Kimbrell; and parents, Ellis and Opal Morgan.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

Sarah Ruby (Lyons) Blauvelt

Dec. 24, 1900 – Aug. 22, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident Sarah Ruby (Lyons) Blauvelt died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. She was 103.

She was born in Forbes Point, Nova Scotia, Canada. At age 17, she attended Normal School in Truro, Nova Scotia, and became a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1918, after one year of teaching, she met and married Aaron Blauvelt, a World War I veteran. They had one daughter, Evangeline, and immigrated to Massachusetts in 1922. They moved to Southern California in 1946 when their daughter married. They lived in Granada Hills, Los Angeles County, until 1963 when they moved to Aptos near Santa Cruz. After her husband's death in 1970, she moved back to Southern California to be near her family. In 1981, she moved to Sonora with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was a Sunday school teacher for many years, a devoted and active member of every church she attended, serving in one capacity or another, her family said, and she was a friend and supporter of several missionaries. In her younger years, she was a camp cook at Angeles Crest Christian Camp in Southern California. She continued to support young people by giving scholarships to Hume Lake Christian Camp. In her later years, she knitted scarves for the children in Russia. She was the eldest member of Sierra Bible Church in Sonora, her family added.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Evangeline and Fred Hooker of Sonora; granddaughter, Cynde Lee of Sonora and her husband, Steve; step-granddaughters, Christine Watkins and her husband, Carl, of Clovis, Fresno County, Cindy Blankenship and her husband, Brad, of McGregor, Texas; great-grandchildren, Justin Angelos and his wife, Rebecca, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Mark Kolinchak of Fountain Valley, Orange County, Matthew Lee of Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County, Alyson Macon and her husband, Josh, of Sonora, Craig and Chad Watkins of Clovis, Cathy Ehlers and her husband, Randy, of Riesel, Texas; and great-great grandchildren, Kendra and Mason Kolinchak, Annika Macon, and Kaeli, Raeni and Staci Ehlers.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Janice Angelos.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sonora Hills Clubhouse.

Private burial is scheduled in Santa Cruz.

BREWER — Earl Brewer, 70, of Jamestown died yesterday at a Sonora hospital. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

VAN BENSCHOTEN — Visitation for Constance "Connie" Van Benschoten, 84, of Sonora is scheduled from 1-9 p.m. tomorrow at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road in Salinas. A rosary is scheduled for 5 p.m. tomorrow at the mortuary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laural Drive in Salinas. Burial will follow the services at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Salinas. She died Sunday at a Sonora care home. Healey Mortuary is handling arrangements.
