Longtime Sonora resident Benny "Ben" Owen McAbee died Friday at his home. He was 63.
He was born in Marmaduke, Ark., and lived in Sonora for 25 years. He and his wife owned and operated McAbee Bookkeeping Service since 1978. He was a member of the Sonora Mountain Lions Club, Sonora Elks Lodge No. 1587 and I.S.T.C., Inland Society of Tax Consultants. He was active in the 20/30 Club of Imperial County.
He was an avid sports fan. His family said he loved basketball and the San Francisco 49ers and Giants. He liked to camp and ride motorcycles, his family said, and loved to joke around and tell jokes.
Mr. McAbee is survived by his wife of 30 years, Paula McAbee of Sonora; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Lydia McAbee of El Centro and Mark and Midge Penrose of Escalon; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Perri McAbee-Snyder of Modesto, Paige and Ed Mobley of Granite Bay, Martha and David Lyons of Don Pedro and Janice and Don Stephens of Sonora; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Ralph McAbee.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at his home in Sonora.

George W. McPherson

George W. McPherson of Murphys died unexpectedly Aug. 3 at his home. He was 86.
He was born in Pittsburgh and lived in Murphys for 14 years. He graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1935. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 4th and 9th Army Headquarters. He retired in 1977 after 30 years with Shell Oil Company. He lived in San Carlos for 25 years and in Pine Mountain Lake for 12 years.
He participated in tennis, baseball and track. His family said he loved to swim, walk his dog and play with his grandchildren. He often could be spotted just after dawn taking his first morning walk or at dusk finishing his day with a 5-mile jaunt through Murphys, his family added.
Mr. McPherson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty M. McPherson of Murphys; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Siemon of Balboa Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven G. and Susan M. McPherson of Verona, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane C. and Jim Kardas of Avery; six grandchildren, Michael A. Sisneros of Albuquerque, N.M., Troy M. and Benjamin T. Kardas and Courtney A., Whitney P. and Chalee McPherson; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan D. and Michael J. Sisneros.
Services were held.

Longtime Sonora resident Gladys Elmore died Thursday at her home. She was 88.
She was born in Stanford, Ill., and lived in Sonora for 43 years. She was a self-employed homemaker for 68 years.
Her family said she loved bingo and gardening.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Austin of Peoria, Ill.; three sons, Tom Elmore of Peoria, Jerry Elmore of Brookings, Ore., and Sam Elmore of Sonora; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Pappy" Elmore, and by a son, James "Crow" Elmore.
No services are scheduled.

Gordon Roy Tydd

Longtime Valley Springs and San Andreas resident Gordon Roy Tydd died Thursday at his home in San Andreas. He was 68.
He was born in Ontario, Canada, and lived in Valley Springs and San Andreas for 17 years. He was a retired printer who owned Anchor Printing in San Andreas for 13 years. He was a high school graduate. He was a member of the local chapter of the Moose Lodge and a past member of the San Andreas Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Tydd is survived by his sons, Bruce Tydd of Sacramento, Gregory Tydd of Redwood City, Forrest Crawford of Crestline, Donald Crawford of Valley Springs, and Kelly Crawford of Lafayette; a daughter, Lisa LaPere of Valley Springs; two brothers, Robert Tydd of Ontario, Canada, and Allan Tydd of San Jose; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Emily Tydd.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at 6159 Garner Place in Valley Springs.

Donald Francis Fitzgerald

Longtime Altaville resident Donald Francis Fitzgerald died Friday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 82.
He was born in Kansas City, Mo., and had lived in Altaville for the past 38 years. He was a psychiatric social worker for the California Youth Authority for 25 years.
He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Men's Club. He was a past big sir of the Murphys branch Sons In Retirement and a member of the Angels Gun Club in Angels Camp. He was past president of Bret Harte Quarterback Club, past president of St. Vincent de Paul Society and past member of the Angels Murphys Arnold Booster Club. He also was a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
His family said he had many interests and hobbies outside of his career. He was an avid gardener, cacti grower and coin and stamp collector, his family said.
Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by his wife, Betty Fitzgerald of Altaville; three daughters, Grace Lamb of Moorpark, Clare Israel of Missoula, Mont., and Julie Bonner of Lakewood, Colo.; a son, Charles Fitzgerald of Camarillo; a brother, Robert Fitzgerald of Milford, Iowa; two sisters, Rosemary Marthaler of Rosemount, Minn., and Shirley Blake of Castro Valley; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 1-7 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at the chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camp. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Altaville.
