June Regina Rickard June 19, 1923 — Aug. 12, 2011 Sonora resident June Regina Rickard died Aug. 12 at Rose Villa One care home in Sonora. She was 88. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., to John Herbert and Isabelle Stone Van Deventer, she was a homemaker and mother of nine children. She was a member of the Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, camping, boating, playing bridge, entertaining and learning how to use the computer. Mrs. Rickard is survived by her husband of 66 years, Marshall J. Rickard, of Sonora; children, Doug Rickard and Rosemary May, both of Placerville, Steven Rickard, of Hawaii, Bryan Rickard, of Sacramento, Tim Rickard, of Sonora, and Jon Rickard and Kate Tenny, both of Modesto; and brothers, Peter Van Deventer, of Morristown, N.J., and Arthur Van Deventer, of La Grange, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Maureen V. Coulson and Marshall J. Rickard Jr.; grandchild, Nicolas Rickard; and siblings, John, George and Henry Van Deventer, Helen Law, Molly Sweeney and Jane Godley. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 3 at the Crystal Falls Clubhouse, 21666 Crystal Falls Drive. Don Grogan Oct. 7, 1928 — Aug. 21, 2011 Sonora resident Don Grogan died Sunday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 82. Born in Ventura to Linus and Sue Grogan, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Tuolumne County in 1952, where he owned and operated a cattle ranch and worked as an auto body repairman and foreman for Davis Motors and Buck’s Body Shop. In 1980, he opened his own business, the Body Shop, on Tuolumne Road in Sonora. In 1995 he sold his business and went on to work as a supervising camp host for Dodge Ridge and the Eureka Valley campgrounds from 1998 to 2005. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, having taken many hunting trips to Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and the Immigrant Basin on the Sonora Pass, and many fishing trips to rivers and lakes in California, Oregon and the Ohio River. Mr. Grogan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Grogan, of Sonora; children, Jerry Grogan, and Craig and wife Cheryl Grogan, all of Sonora; and grandchildren, Makayla and Ryan Grogan, of both of Sonora. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Grogan; and brother, Roland Grogan. A memorial service is scheduled for a later date. Nick Caton March 30, 1920 — Aug. 3, 2011 Former Sonora resident Nick Caton died Aug. 3 at the Masonic Home in Union City. He was 91. Born in Bakersfield, he drove a truck for Halliburton in Bakersfield, where he removed the train tracks for the street cars when they were putting in the electric cars, and in shipyards throughout California. He went on to work for Morrison Knudsen International Construction Co. building dams, roads and airstrips throughout California, New Mexico, Peru and South America. He and his wife Ruby lived in Sonora and throughout Tuolumne County for almost 50 years. While there, they lived and worked at the Silver Spur Christian Camp from 1988 until 2001. The couple moved to Lincoln in 2005 and later to the Masonic Home in Union City. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Order, Shriners and Eastern Star, including the East Belt-Tuolumne Masonic Lodge 8, Royal Arch Masons 2, Cryptic Masons 5, where he served as past commander, and the Shrine Clowns in Sonora. He was also a member of the Tuolumne Star Chapter 123 Order of the Eastern Star of Sonora. Mr. Caton is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruby Caton, of Union City; children, Fred Caton, of Lincoln, and James Caton, of Florida; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Masonic and Christian services were held for him at the Masonic Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 4 at a family member’s home in Bakersfield. Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward is handling arrangements. |
