Martha Marie McCluskey
July 13, 1932 — July 19, 2014
Martha “Martie” McCluskey, entered into eternal rest in Laguna Beach, Calif., at the age of 82.
Martie was a 20-year resident of Sonora, a gracious woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Martie had an amazing gift in finding beauty and joy in God’s creation and taught her children and grandchildren to notice and appreciate nature.
Born in Ft. Wayne, Ind., to Florence and Hiram Webster, the youngest of four, her family moved to Glendale in the 1940s. She graduated from Glendale High where she met her future husband, Jim.
Martie attended Whitworth College and graduated from Occidental College in 1954 to become a school teacher. She taught elementary school in Burbank and Palo Alto. After moving to Sonora in 1976, Martie worked as a teaching assistant at Sonora High School and as office manager in the dental office of Dr. Jon Parker.
A committed Christian since childhood, Martie was supportive of her husband in his pastoral service in Richmond, Daly City, San Francisco and Columbia at the Church of the 49ers. Martie was an active member in each congregation, teaching Sunday school and serving as a deacon. When the couple retired to Laguna Beach in 1996, Martie thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years in the community volunteering in the Assistance League and was a member of the Garden Club.
Earlier this year, Martie was diagnosed with lymphoma. She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters, Julie, and son-in-law, Clark, and Laura, and son-in-law, Jonathan; son, Andrew, and daughter-in-law, Kerri; and grandchildren, Britta, Willy, Sam, Erik, Vanessa, Max, Kristin, Connor and Annika; and great-grandsons Jack and Liam.
The memorial service will be held at Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church on Aug. 30. Bequests to be made in lieu of flowers to Occidental College Department of Education or to the Church of the 49ers.
