Donald Eugene Freitas Feb. 20, 1935 — Aug. 16, 2011 Lifelong Sonora resident Donald Eugene Freitas died Tuesday at his home. He was 76. Born in Sonora to Frank and Edith Freitas, he was a third generation Tuolumne County resident. He lived in Shaws Flat his entire life. He attended Shaws Flat Grammar School, from which he was the only eighth grade graduate. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Anderson and Lehman for many years and retired from the teamsters when he was 55. He then began cutting and selling cords of wood throughout Tuolumne County. He was a trustee for the Shaws Flat Cemetery and a founder of the Shaws Flat annual picnic. In 2007, he helped return the Miner’s Bell to Shaws Flat. He was a slow pitch baseball player for the Running Bear Ford and Desert Dinosaurs. He enjoyed making wine vinegar and canned olives, which he gave to his friends, helping others and teasing his friends and family, which he referred to as stirring the pot. In 2010 he went to Peru with his son-in-law and friends and hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu. Mr. Freitas is survived by his partner, Myrna Long, of Sonora; children and their spouses, Shirley Freitas and Larry Weissman, of Tiburon, Marcia and John Cameron, and Matthew and Juli Freitas, all of Modesto, John Freitas, of Stockton, and Vickey and Henry Gerhart, of Sonora; sister, Pat McAdams, of Tucson, Ariz.; one great-grandson; and one aunt. In additions to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie Freitas; and grandson, Jeremy Cameron. A service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday to be followed by a potluck at the Sonora Elks Lodge. Donations can be made to the Shaws Flat Scholarship Fund, c/o Sonora Area Foundation, P.O.
