Debra Lynn

(Hill) Kelly

Dec. 9, 1956 – April 2, 2004

Debra Lynn (Hill) Kelly of Sonora died unexpectedly last Friday at her home. She was 47.

She was born in Oakland and had lived in Concord since she was 1 1/2 years old. She later moved to Sonora, where she lived for five years. She was a homemaker for 27 years.

Her family said she loved the water and Big Sur, Monterey County. She loved the mountains, camping, animals, nature and had many unusual pets, her family added.

She lived with her dogs, Boo and Hank, Lulu the lizard, rats and a cat.

She is survived by her son, Jared Scott Kelly of Lafayette, Contra Costa County; her father and stepmother, Roy and Sue Hill of Sonora; her mother, Gladys (Berke) Hill of Albany, Alameda County; and a sister, Carrie Ann Hill of Albany.

Private family services are scheduled.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Rose Neumann

Nov. 17, 1924 – April 7, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident Rose Neumann died Wednesday at a Sonora care home. She was 79.

She was born in Mannheim, Ukraine, and had lived in Sonora since 1952. She studied nursing in Germany.

She worked for several clothing retailers, including JCPenney in Sonora, and also worked as a waitress in Sonora. She was a member and past president of the Sonora Emblem Club and used to model at the club's luncheon fashion shows. She served on the Sonora High School scholarship committee for 10 years.

Her family said she enjoyed traveling, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She was a good cook and baker, they added.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Neumann of Sonora; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Alex and Jane Neumann of Chicago, Pete and Debbie Neumann of Sonora and John and Laurie Neumann of Modesto; grandchildren, Alison, Liesl, Laura, Michael, Melissa, Erica Neumann and Alexander Mosiak; a brother, Victor Scheider of Germany; and a sister, Martha Leistner of Germany.

Donations can be made to Sonora Emblem Club No. 124, memorial scholarship fund, P.O. Box 3073, Sonora, CA 95370.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

Robert

‘Bob' Sumpter

Dec. 9, 1927 – April 5, 2004

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Robert "Bob" Sumpter died Monday at his Sonora home after losing his battle with cancer. He was 76.

He was born and raised in Chico. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945-48. He then moved to Alaska, where he worked as a bush pilot and commercial fisherman. He moved to Manteca in 1963, where he worked as a Millwright. At his retirement in 1984, he moved to Tuolumne County, where he opened Jamestown Gold Nugget Jewelry.

He was a past grand master of the Masonic Lodge in Manteca. He also was a member of the Northern California Millwrights Union Local No. 102.

He was an avid golfer and jewelry designer and enjoyed traveling with his longtime companion and friend, Jackie Christensen.

His family said he was a loving, patient, kind father with old-fashioned values, a love of adventure and a great sense of humor.

He had many friends and was loved by those who knew him well, his family added.

In addition to his companion, Mr. Sumpter is survived by his daughters, Shari Hosemann of Merced, Jeanie Larson, Susan Sumpter and Robyne Teslich, all of Tracy; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lee Sumpter; his siblings; and his parents.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse grounds, 19130 Rawhide Road in Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370 or the American Cancer Society, 1604 Ford Ave., Suite 8, Modesto, CA 95350.
