‘Nat' Holbrook Morton Jr.

July 22, 1917 — April 1, 2004

Longtime Calaveras County resident Nathaniel "Nat" Holbrook Morton Jr. died Thursday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 86.

He was born in Tescott, Kan., and moved to California's Central Valley as a toddler. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1935 where he was on the basketball and tennis teams. He attended Modesto Junior College and San Jose State College before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1941. He served as a gunnery sergeant in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

In 1945 while stationed at Quantico, Va., he met and married his wife, Ann. After the war, he graduated from San Jose State with a degree in physical education. He worked for Milligan's News Agency in San Jose for 32 years before moving to Avery, where he lived for 24 years. He recently moved to Foothill Village Retirement Community in Angels Camp.

His family said he was an avid fisherman who loved the ocean and the mountains.

Mr. Morton is survived by his children, Mike Morton of Santa Cruz, Dennis Morton of North San Juan, Nevada County, Steve Morton of Seattle, Sue Burita of Arnold and Carol Manley of Murphys; a brother, Richard Morton of Moreno Valley, Riverside County; a sister, Margaret Crable of Aptos, Santa Cruz County; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
