Darlene Yvonne (Westermeyer) Carleton

Sept. 8, 1923 — April 2, 2003

Darlene Yvonne (Westermeyer) Carleton, 79, of Sonora died Wednesday at her home.

Mrs. Carleton was born in Boulder, Colo., and had lived in Sonora for the past 10 years.

She was a registered nurse, and was active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Lindsay, where her family had lived from 1952 to 1992. She also was active in the Sonora Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She enjoyed traveling throughout the world with her husband, and her family said they met many good friends everywhere they visited.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Arthur Carleton, in 1998, and by a son, Gary Dean Carleton.

Mrs. Carleton is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Haverstock Jr. of Sonora; a brother, Harry Westermeyer of Oklahoma; a sister, Clarabele Westermeyer of Clovis; three grandchildren, Gregory Chang of Yakima, Wash., Kari Holden of Corona and Robert Haverstock III of Sonora; and a great-grandson, Ryan Chang of Yakima.

No service will be held. Inurnment will be private at Lindsay Strathmore Cemetery in Lindsay. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.

Lylas (Ratto) Taylor

Oct. 9, 1905 — April 3, 2003

Lylas (Ratto) Taylor, 97, a native of Tuolumne County, died yesterday at a Merced convalescent home, where she had lived for the past 19 years.

She was born at the Shaws Flat ranch in Sonora, where her grandparents settled in the 1860s. She was the oldest and only surviving daughter of Kate (Ghiorso) and Adolph Ratto.

Mrs. Taylor graduated from Shaws Flat Elementary School and Sonora High School. She worked at various businesses in Sonora. Before marrying George Taylor, her jobs included working for the late John Balestra at Lester's Drug Store, and in a bookkeeping position for Jacobs Bros. Grocery.

She and her husband operated a laundry and cleaning agency in downtown Sonora from 1936 to the early 1960s.

She was a member and past president of the Smyth-Bolter Post American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of the Sonora Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Alton McRae of Mariposa; eight grandchildren, Sandra McRae of Mariposa, Richard McRae and his wife, Kelly, of Windemere, Fla., Donald and Ronald Mundello, both of Turlock, Pamela Spears of Hughson, Scott Taylor of Stockton, Todd Taylor of Manteca and Terry Taylor of the Bay area; two foster grandsons, George Matthews of Charleston, S.C., and Terry Bullis of Raymond, Madera County; and 11 great-grandchildren, including Patrick and Nathan McRae of Windemere; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Taylor; parents, Kate (Ghiorso) and Adolph Ratto; an aunt, Mary Coratto; uncles Joe and Perry Ratto and Joe Ghiorso; and stepchildren Orville and Kenneth Taylor and Mildred Taylor Asbill.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora.

Memorial donations may be made to the Thelma Flory Scholarship Fund of the 12th District American Legion Auxiliary, in care of June Gebhardt, 518 Hunter, Modesto, CA 95350.

Jacqueline Wilkinson

‘Jackie' Kruse

Feb. 5, 1922 — April 3, 2003

Jacqueline Wilkinson "Jackie" Kruse, 81, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora hospital.

Mrs. Kruse was born in San Francisco and had lived in Sonora for the past 25 years.

She was a charter member of Sierra Foothills Women's Club and had served as its travel chairwoman, and was a member of the Wednesday women's group at Twain Harte Golf Club. She enjoyed golf and the camaraderie of the women she played with, her family said. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening and traveling with her husband.

Mrs. Kruse is survived by her husband, Bill Kruse of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Jeanne Bencharsky of San Bruno; and an aunt, Mildred Bencharski of San Francisco.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stephan Bencharsky.

No services will be held. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


LUCE — Jessica Luce, 57, of Tuolumne died Wednesday at her home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

KINGSBURY — Marion Kingsbury, 95, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
