 Mary C. (McGarry) Lape

March 30, 1929 — April 27, 2013

Tuolumne resident Mary C. Lape died Saturday at her home. She was 84.

Mrs. Lape was born and raised in New York City, N.Y., to James J. McGarry and Mary (Barnes) McGarry.

She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis for 35 years. She began her membership in New York and continued in California.  

She settled in Tuolumne in 2004.

Mrs. Lape was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Lape.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Patricia A. Lape, of Staten Island, N.Y., and Thomas E. and Ellen Prato, of Bassett, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Prato, of Raleigh, N.C., and Allison Prato, of Richmond, Va.; her siblings, Veronica Hanf, of Tuolumne, James McGarry, of Copperopolis, and John McGarry, of Simsbury, Conn.; many nieces and nephews, and three great-grandnieces.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A Rosary will follow at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church, 18674 Cherokee Drive, Twain Harte. Interment will take place in Fishkill, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to All Saints Catholic Church Baptistery Fund, P.O. Box 642, Twain Harte, CA 95383 or Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North Sonora, CA 95370.

Kelly Lee ‘DeeDee’ Winans

October 9, 1967 — April 24, 2013

Soulsbyville resident Kelly Lee “DeeDee” Winans died Wednesday at his home after year long battle with cancer. He was 45.

Mr. Winans was born on Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato to Grant and Annemarie Winans. The family settled in Soulsbyville in September 1984.

He graduated from Sonora High School in 1986.

After graduation he joined the WATCH Program,  where he remained active for 27 years until his illness prevented him from participating.

Mr. Winans was the first developmentally disabled person to join the Tuolumne-Calaveras Association for Handicapped Board of Directors. He served from 1994 to 1996.

He earned a certificate in child development from Columbia College and worked with the Head Start Program at Soulsbyville Elementary School for three years.

Mr. Winans served as both president and vice president of the Kiwanis Aktion Club. He was also a member of the Tuolumne County Lions Club, the WATCH bowling team and softball league and was a member of the WATCH newspaper’s editorial staff.

He helped knit and crochet more than 100 items that were sent to an orphanage in the Ukraine around 2011.

Mr. Winans also volunteered with the Miss Tuolumne County Pageant for 27 years. The pageant was dedicated to him in 2012 to commemorate his many years of service with the program.

Mr. Winans was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Maudie Winans and Martha Bielefield; his uncle, Gerald Fitz; brother-in-law, Arnold Foxx; and nephew, Robert Christopher Gaither.

He is survived by his parents, Sgt. Maj. Grant and Annemarie Winans, of Soulsbyville; his siblings and their spouses, Edith and Bill Gaither, of Suisun, Debra Foxx, of Sonora, Tina and Mark Mather, of Copperopolis, and Brian and Carol Winans, of Twain Harte; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to WATCH Resources, Inc., 12801 Cabezut Road, Sonora, CA 95370.

LOWITT — Ethel Lowitt, 86, of Sonora, died Friday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  

NELSON — Shirley Nelson, 77, of Jamestown, died Sunday at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  

VEYSEY — Vincent Veysey, 26, of Tuolumne, died Friday at  Black Oak Casino. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
