John Jay Fiske

March 1, 1917 – March 31, 2004

Longtime Greeley Hill resident John Jay Fiske died Wednesday, March 31, at his home. He was 87.

He was born in San Francisco. He was a member of the John Jay Fiske and Alonzo Worthington Diehl pioneer families of Greeley Hill.

He graduated from Coulterville Elementary School and Sonora High School in 1934, where he played on the school's championship football team.

He then graduated from Modesto Junior College and the University of California, Berkeley.

He returned to Greeley Hill 33 years ago after working for many years in the electronics industry in Southern California. He built his retirement home on family property there.

His family said his main interests were his family, hiking and preserving local historic landmarks, including Bower Cave and the Muir Altar Stone.

He had a deep respect for all living things sharing the planet, his family added.

He served as a past president of the Greeley Hill Community Club and past noble grand of the Coulterville I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 104 and helped in the construction of the Greeley Hill Senior Annex.

He was a member of the Coulterville United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Northern Mariposa County History Center and past member of the Gold Country Singers.

Mr. Fiske is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ellen Fiske of Greeley Hill; a son, Kent Fiske of Jackson, Wyo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Fiske and Steve Mc-Connell of Washington, D.C., and Nancy and Jeff Craig of Stockton; and grandchildren Rebecca and Jonathan Craig of Stockton.

Services were held.

Donations can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370 or to the Northern Mariposa County History Center, 10301 Highway 49, Coulterville, CA 95311.

The Neptune Society of Central California in Fresno handled arrangements.

Percy Frederick

Feb. 6, 1930 – April 21, 2004

Longtime Jamestown resident Percy Frederick died Wednesday, April 21, at his home. He was 74.

He was born in Peterson, Ala., and lived in Jamestown for 43 years. He was the owner of the Lake Tulloch Marina for 30 years.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

His family said he enjoyed living life to its fullest with his wife, Jeanne, his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Frederick is survived by his son, Ron Frederick of Jamestown; a daughter, Charlene Frederick of Oakdale; a brother, Jim Frederick of Weiser, Idaho; a sister, Jackie Gale of Boulder City, Nev.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

A memorial service is scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow at Grace Lemmons Senior Citizens Hall on A Street in Oakdale.

John B. Siirila

June 21, 1917 – April 24, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident John B. Siirila died Saturday at a Sonora care home. He was 86.

He was born in Ironwood, Mich., and lived in Sonora for 25 years. He worked as an assembler for International Harvester Company in Michigan for 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a past member of the Sonora Moose Lodge No. 2183.

His family said he loved to fly, camp, play cards, and he was an avid pilot.

Mr. Siirila is survived by his wife, Elva Siirila of Sonora; and a brother, Clifford Siirila of Las Vegas.

No services are scheduled.

Steve

Glenn Grove

Sept. 25, 1958 – April 25, 2004

Longtime Tuolumne resident Steve Glenn Grove died Sunday at a Sonora hospital after a short illness. He was 45.

He was born in San Francisco and had lived in Tuolumne County since 1973. He most recently lived in Tuolumne, where he raised his family.

He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for George Reed in Modesto for 15 years. He graduated from Sonora High School in 1976. He broke his neck in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle accident in 2001.

His family said he loved his kids and granddaughter and enjoyed fishing with his sons as they grew up. He also enjoyed motorcycles, including Harley-Davidsons, and target shooting.

Mr. Grove is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathy Grove of Tuolumne; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Kendra Grove of Tuolumne and Jesse and Paula Grove of Columbia; a granddaughter, Bailey Joan Grove of Tuolumne; his mother, Jean Grove of Sonora; sisters, Kathi Hendrix of Los Banos and Debi Marez of Murphys; his best friend, John Holbert of Chinese Camp; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Grove.

Private family memorial services are scheduled.
