Martha

Lucille Cullings

May 10, 1928 –April 22, 2004

Martha Lucille Cullings of Columbia died Thursday at her son's home in Arnold. She was 75.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio, and had lived in Columbia for two years. She worked as a homemaker for 57 years.

She is survived by her sons, Michael J. Singleton of Arnold, Stephen L. Singleton of Modesto and Paul G. Singleton of Ruidoso, N.M.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Craig D. Singleton, in 1986.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Valentine Firpo

Feb. 14, 1926 – April 24, 2004

Longtime Jamestown resident John Valentine Firpo died Saturday at his home. He was 78.

He was a native of San Francisco and had lived in Jamestown since 1977. He was a former Southern Pacific Railroad assistant station master for 10 years and was involved in many community activities, his family said.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was an accomplished musician, a longtime barbershop quartet singer, founded the band, "Noteables" and played the accordion, his family added. He belonged to the Accordion Club of Escalon and Sonora Gold Rush Chorus. He was a longtime active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora and member of Tuolumne County Senior Center. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a minister of communion and taught religious education classes. He and his wife founded the Cabrini Center of Jamestown on the land they donated.

Mr. Firpo is survived by his daughters, Carlene Firpo and Angela Burton both of Monterey and Rita Firpo of Manteca; four grandchildren, Brian, Kate and Emily Burton and Gianna Firpo-Hughes; and cousins, Bud Rusconi of Redwood City and Robert Rusconi of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carlene "Cis" Firpo in 1988.

A rosary is scheduled for 5 p.m. tonight at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora. Burial is scheduled for Thursday at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.

Donations can be made to Tuolumne County Senior Center, 540 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA 95370.

Lina

Maria Hastings

Sept. 7, 1930 – April 22, 2004

Lina Maria (Cannstaetter) Hastings of Sonora died Thursday at a Turlock medical center following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 73.

She was born in Ulm, Germany, on the Danube, and was the second oldest of seven children.

In 1953, she met W.D. "Dan" Hastings while he was serving in the military in Ulm. They were married on June 21, 1955. After her husband's military service, they came to the United States in 1957 and settled in San Francisco. She learned English and was hired as a temporary employee for Dohrman Instruments and went on to work there as an electronics assembler and supervisor for 30 years. In l987, she retired and they moved to Sonora.

She was a charter associate member of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse and an avid animal lover and dog trainer, raising several German Shepherds over the years.

Her family said her love of the land and for her home was always evident in her beautiful gardens where she could often be found planting, pruning and tending.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dan; a brother, Ernst Cannstaetter of Ulm; sisters, Marianne Young of San Antonio, Texas, Lotti Mesick of Sonora and Ella Madel of Ulm; nephews and nieces; and numerous close longtime friends.

She was preceded in death by two younger brothers, Walter and Emil Cannstaetter.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse grounds on Rawhide Road in Jamestown. Relatives and friends are invited. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse Scholarship Fund, Central California Bank, 229 S. Washington St., Sonora, CA 95370.

Martha O'Grady

March 16, 1917 – April 22, 2004

Mona Martha O'Grady of Angels Camp died Thursday at her home. She was 87.

She was born in Canada and had lived in Angels Camp for four years. She was a homemaker for 66 years.

She is survived by her son, Jack O'Grady of Martinez; a daughter, Kathleen O'Grady of Anacortes, Wash.; grandchildren Kathy Praster and Brad Mills, both of Angels Camp, Craig Mills of Rio Linda, Sacramento County, and Mark, Eric and Cheryl O'Grady all of Carson City, Nev.; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Boyd in 1993; and a grandson, Steve Mills.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Donations can be made to Common Grounds Senior Services, Meals on Wheels Program, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson, CA 95642.
