Philo Dean ‘Phil’ Badham

Sept. 4, 1938 — April 15, 2013

Sonora resident Philo Dean “Phil” Badham died April 15 at a residence in Sonora. He was 74.

Mr. Badham was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Richard Dean Badham and Florence May (Wightman) Badham.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Badham worked as a lighting salesman throughout the Sierra foothills for over 30 years.

He lived in Modesto before moving with his wife, Nancy Badham, to Tuolumne County 30 years ago. He moved from Jamestown to Sonora late last year.

He was a member of the Mother Lode Gun Club and National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed fishing and target-shooting.

Mr. Badham was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Nancy Jean (Luizzi) Badham, in 2010; his parents; stepson, James Welch, in 1990; and brother, Sherril Wightman Taylor, in 2011.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Pief, of Sonora; stepchildren, Jack Welch, of Livermore, Janet Stoutenburg, of Livermore, and Jeana Kathleen “Kathi” Boland, of Modesto; grandchildren, Alisha, Britni, and Liv Pief, all of Sonora, Jeana Speers, of Portland, Amanda Welch, of Myrtle Creek, Ore., John Martin, of Tracy, and Steven Slagle, of Pleasant Hill; and five great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held.

Jane Ellen O’Neil Lyle Hoffmann

Feb. 5, 1933 — April 19, 2013

Murphys resident Jane Ellen O’Neil Lyle Hoffmann died April 19 at Mark Twain Medical Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Hoffmann was born in Venice in Los Angeles County to George and Marian Lyle.

She moved with her family to Murphys in 1968 after vacationing in the area.

She worked as a manager and tour guide at Mercer Caverns.

Mrs. Hoffmann and her husband, I.S. “Hoppy” Hoffmann, were members of the National Civil War Association and participated in many Civil War reenactments.

She enjoyed participating in living history events.

Mrs. Hoffmann was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, I.S. Hoffmann, in 1994; her parents; and her brothers, John and James Lyle.

She is survived by her children, Robert Hoffmann, of Sheep Ranch, Richard Hoffmann, of Des Moines, Iowa, Diane Brown, of Douglas Flat; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, George Lyle, of Mission Viejo, and Park Lyle, of Upland.

Private family services will be held.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

John Nevin Shaw

Oct. 20, 1920 — April 19, 2013

Sonora resident John Nevin Shaw died April 19 at his home. He was 92.

Mr. Shaw was born and raised in San Francisco to Fred and Myrtle Shaw.

He served in World War II as a U.S. Merchant Marine. 

He married Ruth Welch in 1943 and worked as a real estate broker in the Bay Area for 50 years.

Mr. Shaw enjoyed music, parties and political debates. He was a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and played clarinet and saxophone.

Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Albert Shaw.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth M. Shaw, of Sonora; children and their spouses, John and Justine Shaw, of San Juan Capistrano, James and Anne Shaw, of Lafayette, Richard C. Shaw, of Sonora, and Susan and Dan Epperson, of Sonora; grandchildren, Kevin Shaw, of New York, Christopher Shaw, of San Diego, Alex Shaw, of San Francisco, Aaron Shaw, of Lafayette, Jenna Diermann, of Florida, and Cristina and Jillian Epperson, both of Sonora; sister and brother-in-law, June and Wally Shambaugh, of Sebastopol; and sister-in-law, Gladys Sand, of Arroyo Grande.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. May 3 at Susan and Dan Epperson’s home.

James Michael Shea

March 10, 1940 — April 20, 2013

Murphys resident James Michael Shea died April 20 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital. He was 73.

Mr. Shea was born in Butte, Mont., to Elmer and Catherine Shea.

He moved with his family to California when he was 18.

Mr. Shea worked as police officer in Los Gatos for 20 years.

He moved to Murphys about six years ago to be with family.

Mr. Shea was a member of the Los Gatos Lions Club and Murphys Angels Lions Club. He enjoyed camping and boating.

Mr. Shea was preceded in death by his son, David Michael Shea, in 2006; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sara Shea, of Murphys; daughters, Kelly Shea Russell, of Murphys, and Ginger Ann Kehmna, of San Jose; son, James Monahan Shea, of Modesto; sisters, Mary Jo Seel, of Montana, and Pat Ann Hopkins, of Nevada; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Lucy’s Church, 2350 Winchester Blvd., Campbell.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Lions Eye Foundation, P.O. Box 7999, San Francisco, CA 94120.
