Mary Kathryn ‘Katy’ (Callison) Buie

Sept. 1, 1937 — March 27, 2012

Longtime Tuttletown resident Mary Kathryn “Katy” (Callison) Buie died March 27 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 74.

Ms. Buie was born in Texas and retired from working at the Tuolumne County Jail. She also was a restaurant and business owner for many years. Her businesses included the Pick, the Red Barn and the Pick Catering Co.

She lived in Tuttletown for 45 years. 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Rita Stone, of Sonora; grandchildren Erin Stone Bryden and Brian Stone; and five great-grandchildren. 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. 

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

Douglas Eugene Cross

June 15, 1929 — March 22, 2012

Groveland resident Douglas E. Cross died March 22 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. He was 82.

Mr. Cross was born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., to Douglas Alvin and Gladys MacRae Cross. He was a graduate of the Abbey, an all-boys high school in Cañon City, Colo., and studied pre-medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

He left Creighton to join the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He was a Navy pilot from 1950 until 1972, and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He had served on the USS Hornet No.12 aircraft carrier and also the USS Oriskany No.34 aircraft carrier, and retired as a lieutenant commander. 

In 1959, he was asked to become a Blue Angel pilot, but declined due to his growing family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Wildgen Cross, whom he met during high school and married in 1953; his parents, Douglas and Gladys Cross; his infant sister, Delphine Cross, in 1931; and his infant daughter, Julianne Cross, in 1963.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dolores Schord Cross, of Groveland; and children and their spouses, Kathryn M. Cross and Michael Giari, of San Mateo, Lisa M. Cross Bonahoom and Bob Bonahoom, of Hillsborough, Carol A. Cross, of Tracy, Douglas E. Cross, Jr. and Cathleen Cross, of Fremont, Theresa J. Cross (Hale), of San Francisco, Maura K. Cross Parrish, of Penn., and Jerry W. Cross, of Burlingame; stepchildren Dawn Cardona, of Cottonwood, Ariz., Marilee Hamilton and her husband Steve Hamilton, of Carson City, Nev., Bob Schord and his wife Diane Schord, of Livermore, Bill Schord and his wife Cindy Schord, of San Jose and Julie Hughes and her husband Rob Hughes, of San Leandro; grandchildren Rhys Bonahoom, Ian Bonahoom, Marisa Bonahoom, Jerome Kief, Joseph Kief, Georgia Giari, Brittany Prince, Chiara Cross, Rand Hale, Tshy Parrish and Taylor Parrish, Eric Cardona, Lisa Cardona, Bob Hamilton, Donny Hamilton, Matthew Hamilton, Alex Schord, Gabrielle Schord, Jeffrey Schord, Danielle Schord and Jebediah Hughes; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Big Oak Flat. A reception will follow in the church hall.

A service and inurnment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 1050 Harder Road, Hayward at 2 p.m. June 15.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Maryknoll Sisters.  

Science Care of Arizona handled arrangements. 

Anne Diehl

Nov. 19, 1918 — March 24, 2012

Sonora resident Anne Diehl died March 24 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 93.

Mrs. Diehl was born in Lakewood, Ohio.

She married her husband, Bill Diehl, on May 2, 1942. They had three children and lived in Walnut Creek, Alamo and Danville. Her husband worked as an architect in the 1950s and 1960s. She raised their children and managed his business, and also worked for a number of years for Bernard of Vienna, a European antique dealer in Walnut Creek. 

The couple moved to Sonora in the early 1970s. 

Mrs. Diehl is survived by a daughter, Debbie Colston, of Sonora; her son, B.J. Diehl, of Alamo; grandchildren Natalie McCarty and Jimmy Diehl; and numerous nieces and nephews, the majority of which live in Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Carla Diehl, and her husband, Bill Diehl, in 2004.

A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sonora Hills clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name can be made to a favorite charity.
