Lillian Pauline (McAnally) Atkins

March 20, 1922 — April 13, 2013

Jamestown resident Lillian Pauline (McAnally) Atkins died April 13 at Meadowview Manor in Sonora. She was 91.

Mrs. Atkins was born in Dexter, N.M., to Marion Donald McAnally and Ruby Golda McAnally. The family moved to Imperial Valley when she was 2 years old for her father’s work.

She lived there until 1940, when she married Stanley Estes Atkins, and the couple moved to Santa Monica.

They moved to Jamestown in 1947 and built a home.

Mrs. Atkins worked as a seamstress, nurse’s aide and floral designer.

She served as grand chief of California for Pythian Sisters, worthy matron of the Eastern Star, Girl Scouts of the USA leader, and president for Jamestown PTA, Mother Lode Art Association, Toastmistresses and Sonora Quilt Guild. 

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of the 49ers, Sonora Needle Artists, Embroiderers Guild of America and “Tuesday Club,” a women’s group in Sonora.

Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Stanley Estes Atkins, in 1984; her parents; brothers, Alton, Raymond and Verl McAnally; and sister, Ruth Douglass.

She is survived by her children, Kyle Atkins, of Soulsbyville, Eileen Bergeson, of Longview, Wash., Kathi Fox, of Soulsbyville, and William Atkins, of Jamestown; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. July 12 at First Presbyterian Church of the 49ers, 11155 Jackson St., Columbia.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Erastel ‘Gus’ Augustus Poston

Aug. 2, 1936 — April 6, 2013

Sonora resident Erastel “Gus” Augustus Poston died April 6 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. He was 76.

Mr. Poston was born in Mena, Ark., to George and Reatha Poston.

He cut trees for Alderman Logging until his retirement in 1994.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening.

Mr. Poston was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, John and Robert Poston. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Alice Poston, of Sonora; children, Carl Poston, of Nevada, Carol Adams, of Montana, Diana Hoover, of Grover Beach, Lynette Novoa, of Sonora, and Lisa Holmes, of Soulsbyville; siblings, Homer Poston, of Sonora, Ella Hobbs, of Arkansas, and Joyce Long, of the Central Valley; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
