James Hershel Ames of Sonora died Wednesday at a Sonora care home. He was 75.
He was born in Epps, La., and previously lived in Corning, Tehama County, before moving to Sonora six years ago. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a lumber mill worker for 35 years.
His family said he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and horses.
Mr. Ames is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Mary Ames of Reno, Nev.; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Terry Iveson and Jill Denise Ames, all of Sonora, Kelly and Michael Jones of Susanville, Lassen County, and Cynthia Arnold of Eureka; a brother, Billy Roy Ames of Texas; a sister, Cybil Roach of Fort Bragg, Mendocino County; grandchildren, Cameron, Alan and Ben Iveson, Jill Neves, Ty Tyler, Steven and C.W. Jones and Zach Arnold; great-grandchildren, Chantel and McKenzie Iveson, Ethan, Austin and Garrett Neves, Shannon Jones and Sebastian Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Ames, in 1997.
No services are scheduled at his request.

Pauline Renon Frey of Angels Camp died Saturday at a San Andreas hospital. She was 74.
She was a native of Utah and grew up in Angels Camp. She graduated from Bret Harte High School and worked for the Bret Harte Sanitarium as a secretary. She was a member of Figli d'Italia in Sonora, sang for many years with the Stockton Chorale singing group and volunteered at Lodi Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her stepchildren, Dennis Frey of Lodi and Gayle Jackson of Linden; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two cousins, Joseph Rosano of Oregon and David Robinette of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tay Frey; and a stepson, Steven Frey.
Services were to be held yesterday and today.
San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
GUSTAFSON ┬Ś Robert Henry Gustafson, 77, of Sonora died Monday at a Flagstaff, Ariz., hospital. Norvel Owens Mortuary in Flagstaff is handling arrangements.
VILLEGAS ┬ŚCheryl Gay Villegas, 48, of Campo Seco died Tuesday at a Modesto hospital. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Paloma Community Church in Valley Springs. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
