Harold Hubbard ‘Hal’ Fleming
March 7, 1915 — March 6, 2012

    Sonora resident Harold Hubbard “Hal” Fleming died March 6 at Skyline Place. He was 96.
    Mr. Fleming was born in Oakland and worked as an accountant at Standard Oil-Chevron for 40 years. He was an Oakland Raiders and A’s fan and enjoyed traveling the world with his wife.
    Mr. Fleming also enjoyed camping, reading, chess and bridge.
    Mr. Fleming and his wife lived in Lafayette for over 55 years before moving to Skyline Place in Sonora five years ago. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley, in 1936, with a bachelor’s degree in business. Mr. Fleming enjoyed watching sports on television.
    Mr. Fleming was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Eileen Fleming, in 2011.
    Mr. Fleming is survived by children Jim Fleming, of Carmichael, Jean Loyd, of Lafayette, Contra Costa County, Sally Allison, of Sonora, and Christine Peterson, of Sonora; grandchildren Eric Loyd, of Dana Point, Dr. Ryan Loyd, of Lafayette, Ind., Aimee Allison, of Sonora, Shelley Molinari, of Sonora, Chas and Joel Templeton, both of Corona del Mar, and Michelle Peterson, of Chicago, Ill.; and nine great-grandchildren.
    A memorial service has been held.
    Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Juan Antonio Valencia
June 11, 1930 — March 5, 2012

    Valley Springs resident Juan Antonio Valencia died March 5 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital. He was 81.
    Mr. Valencia was born in San Francisco and lived in Valley Springs for 20 years. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley, and studied foreign languages, music and drama.
    In 1956 he taught Spanish and French at El Segundo High School and was also an interpreter for the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., under President John F. Kennedy.
    Mr. Valencia studied, taught and sang opera in Rome, Italy, for several years. Mr. Valencia undertook many ventures from opening a hotel in British Columbia with Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joe Kapp to opening a restaurant in Southern California where he enjoyed singing to his patrons.
    He also had the opportunity to sing the national anthem at a Dodgers-Atlanta baseball opening game after being invited to sing by the Mexican-American Scholastic Federation.
    Mr. Valencia is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Emelda Bernal, of Valley Springs; grandchildren Antoinette Bernal, Anthony Bernal, Daniel Bemal, Christina Bernal and Victoria Bernal; his brother, Benjamin Valencia, of Tracy; sisters Carmen Espinosa, of Stockton, Yolanda Raymond, of Hayward, and Bonnie Rodriguez, of Walnut Creek; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
    Mr. Valencia was preceded in death by brothers, Rudy Valencia, Gustavo Valencia, Francisco Valencia, Thomas Valencia and Michael Valencia.   
    A memorial Mass was celebrated.
    San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Susanne Marie
‘Sue’ Jensen
April 18, 1939 — March 10, 2012

    Tuolumne resident Susanne Marie “Sue” Jensen died March 10 in a Palo Alto hospital. She was 72.
    Mrs. Jensen was born in Greeley, Colo., and lived in South Denver. She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and graduated from the Blodgett School of Nursing.
    Mrs. Jensen served in the U.S. Peace Corps in West Pakistan from 1964 to 1966 educating young Pakistani nursing students in Karachi. She then worked for U.S. AID (Agency for International Development) in a civilian hospital in Da Nang, South Vietnam, in 1967-1968.
    She practiced nursing in Denver until moving to California after her marriage to Jerry Jensen in 1971.
    In California, she specialized in staff development until her retirement in 2002. She moved to Tuolumne in 2002 and was active in church and the Pine Tree Piecers Quilters Bee.
    Mrs. Jensen was preceded in death by sons Jay Jensen in 1972 and John W. Jensen in 2005; and her parents William and Johanna Van Wyke.
    Mrs. Jensen is survived by her husband of 41 years, Jerry Jensen, of Tuolumne; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Heather Jensen, of Santee; brothers Bill Van Wyke, of Denver, Don Van Wyke, of Denver; her sister, Janice Nyenhuis, of La Mesa.
    A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sierra Bible Church, 15171 Tuolumne Road, Sonora.
    A donation in her name may be made to a charity of choice.

Diane
Dahl Kelley
March 24, 1949 — March 8, 2012

    Longtime Jamestown resident Diane Dahl Kelley died March 8 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 62.
    Mrs. Kelley was born in Oakland and moved to Standard as a child. She lived in James-town for 55 years.
    She worked as a shuttle driver at Black Oak Casino. She previously worked at the WATCH program and was a volunteer with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Community Service Unit. She enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo nd cribbage.
    Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by her mother, Roberta May Dahl, in 2011.
    Mrs. Kelley is survived by her husband, James Kelley, of Jamestown; her sons and daughter-in-law, J. Lyle and Angela Kelley, of Modesto, and Jim Kelley, of Sonora; sisters Paulette Thorp, of Fremont, Leri Harper, of Wash. and Sherree Thorp, of Wash.; grandchildren Curtis Kelley and his wife Catelin Kelley, of Modesto, Megan Kelley, of Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, Tiffany Roe, of Modesto, Justin Roe, of Florida; two great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.
    A potluck celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Woods Creek Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 18725 Highway 108, Jamestown.

Kirkland Britt
Jan. 12, 1936 — March 3, 2012

    Sonora resident Marie Kirkland Britt died March 3 at Avalon Care Center. She was 76.
Mrs. Britt was born in Santa Fe, N.M., to John and Edna Kirkland. She was raised on a dairy farm in Salinas with her siblings.
    In 1989, she moved to Sonora, where she met and married Ken Britt. Mrs. Britt was a home health aide for many years.
    She and her husband were members of the Moose Lodge and she enjoyed gardening.
    Mrs. Britt was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Britt; her sister, Treva Brewer; her brother, Johnny Kirkland; and her great-grandson, Angel Rivera.
    She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws Terri and Michael Hendee, of Sonora, and Cindy and Mark Stewart, of Salinas; her son, Donnie Halterman, of Grand Island, Neb.; her brothers, Jimmy Kirkland, of Palo Alto, and Joey Kirkland, of Sonora; granddaughters Tori Fowles and Shenel Ozisik; grandsons Jason and Justin Fowles; and three great-grandchildren.
    Services have been held.
    Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

    THODE — Roland “Chuck” Thode, 68, of Sonora, died Tuesday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
    WALTER — Sue Walter, 60, of Sonora, died Feb. 3 at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held at noon Sunday in the Sonora Elementary School gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name may be made to Sonora Elementary Memorial Scholarship, in care of the Sonora Area Foundation. Pacific Mortuary in San Francisco handled initial arrangements.
