Storms spark fires in Sierra

Thunderstorms are causing hazards in the Sierra Nevada and possibly as low as Twain Harte and Arnold, but aren’t expected any lower this week.

Stanislaus National Forest spokeswoman Rebecca Garcia on Tuesday said three fires were sparked by lightning during a storm Monday night.

All were under a quarter-acre as of this morning, with crews making significant progress to secure fire lines around each one. Two are near Crabtree Road and Aspen Meadows and one is near Bummers Flat.

A warning for flash floods through Tuesday evening was issued to central Tuolumne County by the National Weather Service. It warned of very heavy rain flooding canyons and mountain streams and peaks.

The warning specified the Rim Fire burn scar as a hazard area, including Hetch Hetchy and Lower Kibbie Ridge.

No serious flooding was reported as of this morning, according to Rim Fire recovery spokeswoman Georgia Dempsey.
