Yosemite Rim Fire burn areas reopen

Yosemite National Park has reopened hiking trails and other areas of the park that have been closed since last summer’s massive Rim Fire broke out.

Park officials announced Wednesday that 77,000 acres affected by the fire — roughly 10 percent of the park — reopened on Tuesday.

All areas that were previously closed, including the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias and hiking trails in the Hetch Hetchy area, are now open to the public.

“We’re really looking forward to having the public enjoy that resource again,” park spokesman David Miyako said of the popular Tuolumne Grove.

The reopened area spans north of the park’s Big Oak Flat Entrance Station to much of the land surrounding Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. The area includes the Hodgdon Meadow Campground and Hetch Hetchy Backpackers Camp.
