West Point man faces counts of molestation

A West Point man, arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of four counts of child molestation, was to be arraigned this afternoon in Calaveras County Superior Court.

Gerson Jimenez-Rosas, 26, was arrested after an investigation by Calaveras County Sheriff's Detective Bonnie Mathews. She heads the sex-crimes division.

Mathews said yesterday afternoon that Jimenez-Rosas and a 14-year-old girl met at a school Halloween function last year. The girl's name and school she attends are being kept confidential to protect her.

At the time of the school function, Jimenez-Rosas told the girl he was 21.

Mathews said that several months after the initial meeting, the two agreed to meet before and after school and the relationship became more involved.

Mathews said deputies became aware of the relationship on May 14, but declined to say how they found out.

Jimenez-Rosas was stopped Monday afternoon when a deputy saw him in his car on his way to the school to meet the girl. When questioned, Jimenez-Rosas told the deputy his name was Ivan Rendon and that he was 19 years old.

But during jail booking, his fingerprints were checked with those on file from a previous criminal conviction and his identity was discovered. Mathews declined to discuss Jimenez-Rosas' criminal record.

He was also booked on suspicion of providing false information to a peace officer and driving without a license, both misdemeanors.

Mathews said Jimenez-Rosas, from Mexico, works out of the county and is residing in the United States illegally.

Jimenez-Rosas remains held at the county jail in lieu of $455,000 bail.
