Weekend crashes claim jogger, ped

California Highway Patrol officials continue to investigate a pair of weekend auto accidents that left two pedestrians dead.

The first accident, Friday morning, killed a 27-year-old jogger.

The second, Saturday night, resulted in the death of a 23-year-old Jamestown man, Andrew Carrier, who was walking along Highway 49 in Jamestown.

Sonora resident Amy Wayne, the victim in Friday’s accident, was struck and killed about 6:30 a.m. by a 1999 Toyota while she was jogging south on Jamestown Road.

The driver, Tashina Hatler, 22, of Jamestown, told investigating officers she didn’t see Wayne, who was wearing a safety light.

A CHP report said Hatler was driving about 40 mph when she hit Wayne.

CHP Officer Brad Schultz said Friday that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the incident. He also said there wasn’t any evidence Hatler was distracted when her car hit Wayne.

Schultz said Hatler was driving a male passenger from her O’Byrnes Ferry Road home to work in Sonora.

A neighbor performed CPR at the scene but was unable to revive Wayne, CHP said.

CHP said she died of blunt-force trauma.

“This really looks like an unfortunate accident,” Schultz said.

Wayne’s friends and family members described her as an avid runner, dedicated wife and mother.

“They say nobody is perfect, but she was perfect to me,” her husband, Travis Wayne, said Friday evening.

The couple met while attending Sonora High School.

Amy Wayne graduated in 2003.

The high school sweethearts married shortly after graduation.

They have a 2-year-old daughter, Adalee.

Lauren Deatsch, Amy’s friend since the seventh grade, described Wayne as deeply devoted to her family.

Wayne also co-owned and operated a cleaning business with her sister, Jennifer Walker.

“Her daughter and family always came first,” Deatsch said.

Most of the couple’s family members live in the area. Amy Wayne’s mother was en route from Seattle on Friday, according to Deatsch.

“She loved life,” Deatsch said of her friend, who was a bridesmaid in Deatsch’s June wedding. “I couldn’t have asked for a better friend.”

Deatsch said Wayne would try to get friends to go on early morning jogs. Her start time was often 5 a.m.

“If she could get away, she would go running,” Deatsch said Friday afternoon. “And (Friday) was just like any other day.”

An unrelated accident Saturday evening left a 23-year-old Jamestown pedestrian dead.

That accident was reported at 6:30 p.m. at Highway 49 and Main Street in Jamestown.

The pedestrian, Carrier, was walking north on the highway when he was hit by a northbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by Brandon Freemyer, 41, of Jamestown.

A CHP report said Freemyer was traveling about 40 to 45 mph and didn’t see the pedestrian until just before the collision.

An off-duty EMT attempted CPR but the man died.

Neither Freemyer nor his passenger, Nicole Freemyer, were injured, CHP said.

No further information was available this morning.
