Weather delays efforts to contain Rim Fire

The estimated date of full containment for the Rim Fire has been pushed back to Sunday.

Fire managers earlier estimated the fire would be fully surrounded by Tuesday. Unsteady weather conditions created the delay, according to Michelle Carbonaro, incident command spokeswoman for the Stanislaus National Forest.

The fire containment increased over the weekend to 92 percent.

The fire has burned 257,135 acres — up just an acre over the weekend.

Incident command concluded Sunday that the fire was no longer burning actively on the perimeter of the fire inside the Stanislaus National Forest, said Carbonaro.

The remaining 8 percent of uncontained perimeter is in Yosemite National Park.

The number of people working on the fire has dropped to just 287 — down from more than 1,000 last week and about 5,000 at the fire’s peak on Sept. 1.

Management shifted over the weekend from a preassembled California Type 2 Team to two locally-assembled Type 3 teams, one for the national forest and one for Yosemite National Park.

Tyler Otterson is incident commander for the Stanislaus National Forest firefight, and Kelly Singer is incident commander for the park.

The full containment date was previously extended from Sept. 20.
