Weather: Week of storms ahead

As much as 10 inches of rain could fall in the foothills between Tuesday night and Sunday as a series of warm, blustery storms cross the region.

National Weather Service forecaster George Cline, based in Sacramento, said the foothills of Tuolumne and Calaveras counties will receive between 6 and 10 inches of rain by Sunday. Wednesday is expected to be the windiest day, he said, with winds at a steady 25 to 35 mph and gusts as high as 50 mph.

“This kind of wind and rain could cause clogged drains, localized flooding, mudslides and downed trees,” he said.

Cline said the snow levels will stay above 6,000 to 7,000 feet throughout the storm.

Tuolumne County Roads Superintendent Barry Bynum said his crews will be ready to chase the water if necessary and will have sand and shovels available at several locations in case people need them for flooding.

Sand and shovels will be at the old Tuolumne County maintenance yard at Birch and Baker streets in Tuolumne, Big Oak Flat Road Department shop on Wards Ferry Road, at the end of the parking lot at Columbia Airport and at Seventh Avenue and Eighth Street in Jamestown.

Bynum said people can get sandbags at most hardware and building supply stores.

Brenda Johnson, of the Calaveras County Public Works Department, said crews were out early this morning getting ready for the storm, and the locations where people can get sand are posted on the Calaveras County website.

Jeff Hauff, advertising and creative director at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort said the staff is watching closely to see whether enough snow falls at the base of the resort by Sunday night to open for the season.

“There are two models out there,” he said. “One says it will get colder Friday and Saturday, and the other says it will be warmer.”

Hauff said although it would be nice to have enough snow to open sooner, Dodge Ridge typically opens in mid-December. Frequent snow and weather reports are available at dodgeridge.com or on the Dodge Ridge facebook page.

Bear Valley Mountain Resort is also waiting to open. No one was available to update conditions by deadline this morning, but the website at bearvalley.com has frequent updates on weather conditions.
