Water project flows smoothly

By SUNNY LOCKWOOD

While most Angels Camp residents slept Wednesday night, the water system that serves them got an upgrade.

With a full moon overhead and a very large backhoe standing by to help with the heavy lifting, crews from Twain Harte Construction installed a new pressure regulator for the Angels water system. The project required that workers disassemble the old system and completely reassemble it, adding two new shutoff valves and a pressure regulator.

John Kitchell of Angels Camp Public Works Department said the upgrade was vital because of the city's expanding water treatment plant.

"When you go from a 1.3 million gallon water tank to a 2.5 million gallon tank, you're putting a lot more pressure on the lines," Kitchell said. "Water weighs over eight pounds a gallon. You add another million gallons coming down the hill and there's a lot of pressure, so we need the pressure regulator. And the shutoff valves are old and need replacing."

The first new shutoff valve went into place about 1 a.m. The second was in by 1:20 a.m. The pressure regulator was lifted into place by the backhoe at 2 a.m.

City residents and businesses — translating into 1,497 meters in all — had been asked to use no water from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday, while the work was in progress. And city officials reported that, as of this morning, virtually all the water users honored the no-water request.
