Vocational ed versus academics

The Summerville Union High School District Board of Education will discuss vocational classes being used as graduation requirements at its Wednesday meeting.

A state law passed in 2011, Assembly Bill 1330, allows high schools to substitute vocational classes, such as welding, for fine arts or foreign language graduation requirements.

The Summerville High board voted Oct. 24 to take advantage of the new law, pertaining to programs referred to as Career Technical Education.

If approved, Summerville High students will be able to graduate without foreign language or fine arts requirements if they take vocational classes.

Summerville High teachers have said that the change would give struggling students one more way to graduate.

Wednesday’s meeting is an opportunity for community members to weigh in before the district’s Board of Education rules are changed to reflect the policy.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Superintendent John Keiter will discuss the composition of a citizen’s oversight committee for Summerville High’s bond measure.

The committee will help guide decisions about projects and spending if the $8 million Measure H passes.

It did not win enough votes for passage on Election Day, but provisional ballots remain to be counted this week.

PUBLIC MEETING: Summerville Union High School District Board of Trustees, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Summerville High School Library, 17555 Tuolumne Road, Tuolumne.
