Visitor restrictions at Avalon in Sonora

Visitation is restricted at the Avalon Care Center in Sonora until a virus is under control, Avalon representatives said this weekend.

The senior health care center located on Greenley Road is experiencing an outbreak of norovirus, a gastrointestinal infection that causes nausea, stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting. Avalon Administrator Lisa Chappelow told the Union Democrat on Sunday that t

he decision to keep visitors away was made for the safety of the residents.

“Avalon is hopeful that by Wednesday of this week, they will be able to remove the visitor restriction,” Chappelow stated.

Though it is often called a stomach flu, norovirus is not related to the influenza virus which causes respiratory illness. Norovirus is highly contagious, and according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention it can be transmitted through direct contact with someone who is infected, by touching contaminated surfaces or objects, or by consuming contaminated food or liquids.

See Monday's edition of The Union Democrat for the latest on the outbreak.
