UPUD proposes rate hike in Murphys

Water bills for Murphys-area residents could increase this fall under a proposal by the Union Public Utility District.

The district is proposing to increase its monthly base rate of $38 for up to 1,000 cubic feet of water to $41 starting Nov. 1.

After that, the monthly base rate would increase $2 each November until 2018 for a cost of $49.

UPUD supplies water to nearly 2,000 customers in Murphys, Douglas Flat, Vallecito and the Carson Hill area, including the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.

Under the proposal, water rates for the district’s 99 irrigation customers would also rise.

Currently, the monthly base rate for up to 50,000 cubic feet of untreated water from May through October is $29.

That is proposed to increase to $33 a month in November, and a rise of $2 each year until 2018.

The November-to-April monthly base rate would increase more sharply from $29 to $49 to support infrastructure repairs to the irrigation system.

All of the proposed increases don’t include an existing $1 monthly charge that goes into a reserve account for the Utica Water and Power Authority, of which UPUD is a member along with the City of Angels Camp.
