Elimination of two part-time instructional-aide positions is the only item of business on Monday's agenda for the Mark Twain Union Elementary School District Board meeting.
If approved, the cut will reduce Mark Twain's staff of instructional aides from 13 to 11, said district Superintendent Rick Brewer.
One position is for 3.5 hours a day, and the other is for 5.8 hours a day.
"If there was a way we could have saved these people, we would have," Brewer said. "But the money is not there. While we want to supply as many support people as we can, in this climate of reduced funds, it's difficult."
On the other hand, Brewer said, he feels fortunate that the district's budget for next year contains only these two cuts.
Brewer said there are 525 students at Mark Twain and 235 at the district's Copperopolis Elementary School. Copperopolis Elementary will maintain its eight instructional aides, he said.
Even though Mark Twain will have two fewer aides, "The aids who are left will pick up some of the tasks of those who are gone. The level of service will be very similar," he said.
