Tulloch may get flood map reprieve

Hundreds of property owners along Lake Tulloch could avoid having to pay costly flood insurance following a plan to remove their parcels from inaccurate flood zone maps.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting gave Planning Director Peter Maurer permission to apply for a Tulloch-area map revision with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the federal agency responsible for flood response.

If approved, the revision could remove up to 350 shoreline properties from the county’s flawed flood maps.

“In my mind, it’s a huge step forward,” said Board Chairwoman Debbie Ponte, whose district includes Copperopolis.

The ongoing issue stems from a countywide problem involving FEMA flood insurance rate maps that were adopted in 2010. There are mapping errors, and many property owners are listed in a flood zone when they realistically shouldn’t be, county staff said.
