Tuesday is deadline to file state, federal taxes |
Tuesday is the last day to file 2011 state and federal income tax returns without filing for an extension. The date was moved from April 15, the traditional tax day, because it fell on a Sunday. It was pushed back a second day thanks to a federal rule that turns a Washington, D.C., Emancipation Day holiday into a nationwide tax extension. Returns must be postmarked by midnight Tuesday to be considered on time. Post offices in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties will be open regular hours. The nearest post office offering extended hours is in Stockton at 3131 Arch Airport Road, which will be open until 10 p.m. Tuesday is also the last day to file a tax extension with the IRS by using form 4868. Those who have filed for an extension will have until Oct. 15 to file their 2011 returns. Capital gains on the sale of assets can be paid using form 8949. Taxpayers have until April 15, 2015, to file an amended return to claim a tax refund. |
