Summerville High School’s new Measure H-funded stadium is coming to life.
The Summerville Union High School District Board of Education at its Wednesday meeting will review five possible designs for the colors and lettering that will be printed on the turf.
The options vary in end-zone colors, whether “Bears” is written in the end-zones, and whether a large “S” will mark the center of the football field.
The preferred design includes an orange “S” with black piping at a cost of $10,000, and “Bears” written in orange with white piping in each black end-zone at a cost of $1,800 per letter. Without piping, letters are $1,500 each.
The turf manufacturer does not charge for end-zone background colors if schools select stock colors.
San Jose-based BCA Architects developed the designs with guidance from Summerville district staff, Robert E. Boyer Construction of Twain Harte, and members of the community.
The Board of Education is not required to select a design Wednesday, but will conduct a “first reading” of the options and give feedback to the architects.
BCA Architects will also give a presentation on the stadium’s new snack bar and other bond-related topics.
The revamped stadium is one of several construction projects to be funded by the district’s $8 million bond measure approved by voters last November.
The district budgeted about $3.4 million in bond money for the stadium, but Griffith said the number is still a rough estimate.
The district hopes to break ground on the stadium in late spring and complete construction by the next football season, Griffith said.
The Division of the State Architect, which provides design and construction oversight for California schools, is still reviewing the bleacher design for the new stadium. The division reviews projects for accessibility, structural safety and building code compliance.
If construction begins in late spring, the district will have to use alternate venues for commencement and spring sports.
Griffith said off-site athletic facilities have been secured for practices and games.
The district is researching other facilities for commencement, one of which is the school’s baseball field. Griffith said the school could add seating to the field, which would allow students to still graduate on campus.
In other business Wednesday, the Board of Education:
• will review information provided by the California School Boards Association regarding paperless agendas. The board requested the information, which includes cost comparisons and a “return on investment” summary.
• will decide whether to approve the elimination of the “attendance caller” position. Summerville recently purchased an automated attendance calling system through SchoolReach and no longer needs the seven-hour-per-week position, according to meeting documents.
• will hear a presentation from students participating in Summerville’s iPad pilot program.
