Third-graders busted for marijuana

Three third-grade students were caught smoking marijuana at Sonora Elementary School.

It was uncertain whether they would be expelled under the district’s “zero tolerance” policy.

Two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old were caught smoking pot in a bathroom late Thursday morning, according to Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson. Their names and genders were not disclosed.

Another student walked in on them and told administrators, Stinson said.

Sonora police officers responded at 11:05 a.m. The children were released to their parents and the issue was forwarded to the Tuolumne County Probation Department.

School district Superintendent Leigh Shampain said this is the first time something like this has happened in the five years he’s been superintendent.

The district does not discuss specifics of disciplinary cases, he said.
