Teens counseled after being caught with goat

Sonora Police Sgt. Glenn Roberts knew something was amiss yesterday when he encountered two teens at 3:30 in the morning walking along Sanguinetti Road with a goat.

"They said they found the goat on the railroad tracks behind Mother Lode Motors," Roberts said.

"They said it had gotten tangled up in some bushes. But why they were on the railroad tracks and where they were taking the goat, I don't know."

Roberts said he knew the two teens from previous encounters. But other than being out past 11 p.m. curfew, the two were not breaking any laws.

So Roberts counseled 19-year-old John Paul French Schowachert about contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and he took the 16-year-old teen home after calling the boy's parents.

While he took the teen home, another officer waited with the black and white goat until a Tuolumne County Animal Control Officer picked it up and took it to a shelter.

The goat, an unneutered Alpine-mix buck with a piece of rope hanging from a collar, is now at the Tuolumne County Animal Control shelter.

Animal Control Manager Jennifer Clarke said in the last month, six goats have been impounded — all found running loose at various places in the county.

"He's a nice goat," Clarke said. "I'm surprised no one has come to claim him. We have another male goat at the shelter, a pygmy — he really stinks. They are keeping each other company."
