S’ville sees boon in Prop. 30

PUBLIC MEETING: Summerville Union High School District Board of Trustees, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, school library, 17555 Tuolumne Road, Tuolumne.

The Summerville Union High School District Board of Trustees will get a budget update Wednesday reflecting at least some good news from the recent passage of Proposition 30.

The approval of the temporary tax increases means Summerville High will be spared $337,000 in cuts each year for the next several years, said district Chief Business Official Tonya Midget.

When combined with an existing deficit, that would have meant more than $600,000 less to work with year after year.

Summerville High has a comparatively large reserve fund, but it would not have been able to sustain the loss without staff cuts, larger class sizes and a possible shortening of the school year, Midget said.

She said her predictions for the next three years still reflect substantial deficit spending.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Summerville Union High School District Superintendent John Keiter will present teacher and coach Kristy Dwyer with a plaque for her years of service as an athletic director.

At the start of the meeting, newly elected board member Carrie Ashe and returning board member Dennis Spisak will take oaths of office. Ashe is taking the seat formerly held by David Marquez.
