S’ville opts for cement bleachers

The Summerville Union High School District Board of Education decided to pursue cement bleachers instead of more expensive aluminum ones for the district’s new stadium at a special meeting on Wednesday.

The project includes replacing the track, field and bleachers, and will be funded by 2012’s Measure H bond money.

The project’s estimated price grew from $3.2 million to $4.2 million after it was discovered an extensive bleacher foundation and electrical work would be required, according to Robert Boyer Construction at previous board meetings.

The cement bleacher decision came at the suggestion of Boyer, the project’s contractor, after aluminum bleachers originally planned jumped in price when the scope of foundation work was realized by Southern Bleacher Co.

The cement bleachers should save at least $200,000 and should not delay the project beyond its target completion date of this fall’s football season, according to Superintendent Robert Griffith.
