State, federal hopefuls finalized

Congressional and state legislative races for the June 3 primary election are set following the release of a certified candidate list by the California Secretary of State’s Office late Thursday.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay, and State Sen. Tom Berryhill, R-Twain Harte, are both facing challenges for their respective political seats, while Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, is without a challenger.

All three currently represent Mother Lode districts in the state Legislature and U.S. Congress.

California is one of four states with a “top-two” primary system in which the two candidates who receive the most votes move onto the Nov. 4 general election, unlike many other states in which the top vote-getter from each party moves on to face each other.

McClintock will be challenged for his 4th Congressional District seat by businessman and Army National Guard Maj. Art Moore, R-Roseville, and information technology analyst Jeffrey D. Gerlach, I-Lincoln. The district stretches south from Truckee to Sequoia National Forest, and includes both Tuolumne and Calaveras counties.

All candidates running for Congress are required to file their first quarterly campaign finance report of the year by April 15.
