State legislation has been introduced to designate the Mokelumne River a California Wild and Scenic River.
Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, introduced Senate Bill 1199, which calls for protecting 37 miles of the river between Salt Springs Dam and Pardee Reservoir.
Wild and Scenic designation would prevent any new dams on that stretch of river.
The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors in February voted unanimously to support the state designation. Supervisors passed a resolution requesting the county’s representatives in the state Legislature introduce legislation to bring it about.
A few weeks later, the Calaveras County Water District’s Board of Directors discussed the topic, but decided not to take a formal stand.
