Tuolumne County last week was awarded a $20 million state grant to build a new jail.
The California Board of State and Community Corrections formally approved the funding at a Thursday meeting.
Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele said Friday that he was “very pleased” with the grant and feels it is one of the “major hurdles” the county faced in proceeding with the jail project.
The estimated price tag of the new Old Wards Ferry Road jail is about $36 million.
