A 24-year-old Sonora woman was killed Thursday in a head-on crash near Oakdale.
She was identified Friday morning by the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office as Joy Mata. Her identity was released after today's publication deadline.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Mata was driving north on Orange Blossom Road near Horseshoe Road at 6:36 a.m. when she allowed her 1999 Honda to cross the center line into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Toyota Tacoma truck,
The truck driver, a 40-year-old man from Riverbank, told officers he tried to swerve to the shoulder, but could not avoid the accident.
The man in the truck suffered minor injuries and was wearing his seat belt. The CHP said the woman was not wearing her seat belt.
The truck was going 40 to 45 mph, the CHP said. It is not known how fast the woman’s Honda was going.
Both lanes of Orange Blossom were blocked while emergency crews worked on the scene.
