Sonora teens booked on rape charges

Two Sonora High School students were arrested on rape charges Thursday, following a weeks-long investigation by the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

The students — ages 16 and 18 — were arrested about 11:45 a.m. after being escorted from the school by Calaveras County Sheriff’s detectives.

The teens were taken to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office in San Andreas. They were later taken to the Calaveras County Probation Department and transferred to the Napa Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Napa County. They’re held on three felony sex-assault charges each, according to Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz.

The 18-year-old was taken to juvenile hall because he was 17 when the alleged crime occurred.

The names of the students are being withheld.

The investigation began in late June after a friend of the alleged victim’s family reported to Sonora police that the 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted June 21 at a party at a cabin on the 600 block of Skyline Drive in Tamarack, a subdivision in Calaveras County west of Bear Valley, Kuntz said.

The June 26 report was forwarded to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office.

Few details about the alleged crime could be confirmed Thursday.

Sonora High Superintendent Mike McCoy declined to comment. He said he didn’t even know the names of the students.
