A Sonora man on a motorcycle led law enforcement officers on a chase through Sonora, Jamestown and Tuolumne late last night, waving to crowds gathered along the way.
The low speed chase began around 11 p.m. and, at one point, included patrol cars from the Sonora Police Department, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol, according to CHP Officer Michael McDaniel, who was an arresting officer.
The chase lasted nearly an hour. The rider, Kevin Sovereen, 31, a transient who lives in the Sonora area, was closed in by CHP cars and chose to stop, according to McDaniel.
Sovereen was arrested on multiple charges at 11:58 p.m. They included taking a vehicle without owner’s consent, evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, drug possession, and an outstanding warrant for violating post-release community supervision.
He was on community supervision for driving under the influence with a prior conviction, transportation or sale of a narcotic controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance, according to Tuolumne County Jail records.
The chase began on South Washington Street and Restano Way, when Sovereen failed to stop for Sonora police after allegedly running a red light. Sovereen rode the stolen motorcycle out to Jamestown, back to Sonora, out Tuolumne Road and back to Jamestown, back through Sonora, and finally into Tuolumne, where the arrest was made.
McDaniel said Sovereen “wasn’t a very skilled rider.” But he did have time to wave to bar-goers who cheered back at him as he rode through downtown Sonora.
At one point, he rode through the Quail Hollow Apartments and also got some cheers from spectators, even as he “almost ran them over,” according to McDaniel.
The motorcycle, a blue Honda, was stolen from Albany in Alameda County the same day, and had facsimiled car plates that don’t match motorcycle designations.
He was in possession of 2 grams of methamphetamine, and multiple tablets of Xanax, McDaniel said.
