Sonora man nabbed after high-speed chase |
A Soulsbyville stay-at-home mom said she played a role in nabbing a man suspected of leading local authorities on a high-speed chase through East Sonora on Thursday.
Bobbie Carne, 38, mother of four, said a green Honda car driving at a high rate of speed zipped by her Buick Enclave SUV and nearly ran her off the road. “I didn’t appreciate almost getting killed,” she said. Carne said California Highway Patrol vehicles were in hot pursuit of the car, so she continued east on Mono Way toward a store where she was going to buy moving boxes. She came upon what appeared to be the same car surrounded by CHP vehicles in a ravine near Standard Road. “I looked to the right and saw him running across the hillside through the bushes and trees,” she said. Carne said she turned right on Cavalieri Road in an attempt to cut off the man she suspected was the driver from the incident. Carne said that she and officers then chased the man around the area on foot. The man fled through a nearby neighborhood and Carne continued along with the chase. She saw the man duck into a shed before he was apprehended. CHP officers with the help of Tuolumne County Sheriff’s deputies were eventually able to catch up with the suspect and take him into custody, she said. “I was just angry and wanted to take it on myself,” she said. CHP officers arrested the suspect they later identified as Edward Lee Jones, 21, of Sonora, on suspicion of felony reckless evading and driving without a license, after the pursuit that reached speeds of up to 80 mph on Mono Way. The incident began about 1:36 p.m. when CHP Officer Nick Norton pulled up to a stoplight on Mono Way near the Highway 108 off ramp and noticed a green 1995 Honda with expired registration and loud exhaust in the lane next to him, CHP reported. Norton turned on his emergency lights to initiate an enforcement stop, but Jones allegedly sped away east on Mono Way in an attempt to flee, CHP said. After being taken into custody, Jones was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He was later moved to an undisclosed hospital, CHP said. |
